Should They? Shareholders To Vote On Forcing Tesla To Advertise Vehicles
Tesla Inc. shareholders will vote in July on whether the electric-car maker should start doing something Elon Musk has long resisted: advertise its cars.

James Danforth, a San Diego-based holder of 850 Tesla shares, is proposing that the company spend at least $50 per vehicle produced to advertise its products. Tesla’s board opposes the measure.

“Advertising can increase brand value, product awareness and interest,” Danforth wrote in the proposal, which is included in Tesla’s proxy statement. “Tesla ads can help mitigate and dilute substantial FUD (‘Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt’) and misinformation campaigns sponsored by competitors and detractors worldwide and steer the narrative more favorably.”

This is dumb, it should be up to company operational staff to determine whether or not advertising makes sense, not shareholders.

I really hope they are able to do an in-person investor event in July. It was amazing to see the Roadster and Semi in person last year.

I agree. Tesla doesn't need to advertise because it is in a field of 1 more of less. Once EVs become more prevalent, it will need to, but not at the moment. Besides, do you really want to do an ad for the ugly Model Y versus a Mach E? I think not.

Tesla does advertise. They have a fawning media that reports on anything Tesla or anything that Lord Musk has to say (good or dumb) and the guy is brilliant at riding the PR machine. Only one company comes somewhat close to as much freebie media fanfare and that is Apple.

Ferrari never advertised under Enzo's watch and things worked out for them. Build a compelling product, disruptive technology, build a better mouse trap or be contraversial and enjoy the free press. Brilliant marketers know how to tap into this resource...

With a super majority needed to pass, Musk effectively has total control at Tesla despite owning a minority stake.

Pretty much the same can be said about FORD with its Mostly Famly owned class B shares 2% of ownership controls 40% of the vote. With so many votes of Ford stock not voted because they are owned by Funds and Government a 40% vote carried the day.

But Ford does advertise - because they need to. Eventually - the market buyer group for TEsla's current offerings will dry up - and they are too expensive for the average car buyer. That will require new marketing as well as decontented cars. I am sure that they are already planning for that as well.

As long as they keep innovating quickly and making news, they won't need to advertise much. I like the concept of taking money you would normally spend on sales and marketing and invest it into making the product better. That seems to be the healthiest way to truly grow a company. JIRA also did something similar in the tech space, so it's not unprecedented.

@SJD Are you really that much of a business idiot? Of course you are. Tesla has not needed advertising because it's been "innovative" as defined by being the "only" game in town, but as manufacturers dive in they will have to be constantly a decade ahead of the competition and that just won't happen.

For example, if Tesla had an EV that did not cost a penny more than an equivalent ICE vehicle it would need to deploy that NOW or if they had stunning new battery technology that allows a 5 minute "fill up" then they would need to deploy that NOW. Better yet, BOTH innovations now would give them a couple of free years without the need to advertise.

Then what?

It will simply be impossible for Tesla to continue its massive APPEARING lead forever which means advertising.

Tesla needs to create a brand identity that has nothing to do with Elon Musk and right now they don't have that. Advertising would develop some healthy separation between the brand for the sake of its longevity and Elon's propensity to say and do stupid shit like smoking pot on camera or naming his son Zezozose Zadfrack Glutz.

They just launched a rocket with 2 astronauts on it headed for the International Space Station. Although it was Space X, it is still part of the Musk brand. Bigger things to come in the future for Tesla and Space X. No need to spend a dime on ads.
