Germany Orders All Gas Stations To Have EV Charging Stations As Well

As part of Germany’s new increased electric-vehicle incentive package, the country will require gas stations to offer EV charging. Details about the plan are not yet known, such as the timeline and type of required chargers. But EV advocates quickly praised the move as a boost to electric-car adoption.

BDEW, Germany’s association for energy and water industries, believes that at least 70,000 charging stations and 7,000 fast-charging stations are required to achieve a mass market for EVs in the country. BDEW reports that there are currently about 28,000 stations in Germany.

That would totally eliminate Tesla's advantage from its charging network.

Not really. It doesn't sound like they are requiring DCFC stations, simply charging. For most locations, that will likely be a simple level 2 station. No competition to a Supercharging station at all. And even for stations that install DCFC stations, they will be limited on space and power available, so don't expect more than one or two chargers.

Tesla built the charging network because they had to, it doesn't make them any money (unless they decide to up rates dramatically in the future). Tesla owners still prefer Superchargers over other stations because they are easy to use (authentication is done automatically and quickly, you just plug in the car without pressing any buttons or swiping cards), no adapter is needed, and they tend to be less expensive that the public stations for any EV.

I think most people will not want to go out of their way to charge their car, which is what most people have to do in gas cars. You can't leave your car filling up with gas and run to Costco. You should be able to charge when parked at things you do regularly like shop, work, recreational activities, etc.

This is probably the wrong approach, should be putting for EV chargers where it is most convenient for people.
