PLACE YOUR BETS! Will Ford Hit It Out Of The Park With The 2021 F-150 Or Will We Be Scratching Our Heads And Yawning?
Remember when people laughed when Microsoft was at the pinnacle with Windows and people said Apple would be a real challenge?

I do. It seemed like an impossible feat for ANYONE to challenge Bill Gates and his machine. Let alone win.

But Apple DID end up doing the impossible and many still can't believe it.

How does that relate to the auto industry you ask?

Well, Ford is in a similar situation with their F-150 business like when Microsoft was at their peak.

And on 6/25, the stage is set for them to continue their leadership and innovate or take a risk and play the safe card.

001, HOW is playing is safe a RISK?

Simple. In years past, there was no Apple in the car business who could bring something truly revolutionary to the table.

Enter Tesla with CyberTruck.

This puts Ford in the precarious position of having to choose between slow and steady with bursts here and there of innovation OR GO FOR BROKE and become an innovator no one can touch. NOT easy.

And it doesn't help that RAM and GM are breathing down their necks.

So our question is with ALL this anticipation of the upcoming 2021 F-150 do you think we will feel like we just came out of an Apple event after seeing it? All hot and bothered with it being the NEXT thing and a GOTTA HAVE IT lust? Or will we depart deflated saying it's pretty much the same thing with a bigger screen and some  new colors and options.

WHICH side are you placing YOUR money on?

F150 has several variations on the way. A typical pickup truck owner does not want to worry about range anxiety. They need to get the job done without making an environmental statement.

F150 will also be available as an all electric. This will not be a volume vehicle. I would give the nod to Tesla vs. Ford in the electric version. The Tesla WILL NOT be bought by a typical pickup truck buyer. Many will be 1st time truck buyers because of the uniqueness of the vehicle.

Conclusion: Not much to worry about vs. Tesla. GM and Mopar have been turning up the HEAT lately.

American Full size Pick-ups are selling like Hotcakes - with GM and FORD running neck and neck for the lead (GM combined GMC/Chevy). Right now it is a matter of inventory being available - they are low. None of the three have anything to really worry about - although the GM split is moving towards GMC - which might move Chevy down. Meaningless - this is where the Three of them make their profits - and there is no reason for that to change anytime soon. If GM comes out with a better looking HD Chevy - they might even add sales.

Given the hunger for pick-ups right now and the pent-up demand. This will go gangbusters.

Guys,

I didn't say would it SELL. I asked if we will look at it and say wow, they really kicked it up a notch or two. Or will it just be another F-150 with a big screen tacked on?

Of COURSE, it will sell. But you watch, the Tesla will eat away at the poser pickup truck buyer like me and steal a GOOD amount from the high end of the product line spectrum.

Down the road, unless the Big 3 make HUGE changes, Tesla will leave them with the low-end work truck market and steal their sizzle.

You're right. The Cybertruck will take a huge chunk out of the high-end market.

Made in Texas is just the cherry on top.

This new F150 will be evolutionary.. NOT revolutionary.. So it's a safe bet the base of F-series customers will by it.

Problem with Tesla CyberTruck is electrics run out of juice rapidly when they tow a load = major disadvantage vs. ICE..!!!

As for how the Tesla is going to siphon off all the posers, let's go down that path and think it through. If you are driving a Tesla people will know you're a pickup poser and the whole thing behind a poser is to do your posing with the real thing.

Come on 001, I know you used to work for Apple, but MacOS only made a small dent in Windows desktop usage. As in 77% vs. 18%. Yep they absolutely shut down Windows Phone, no argument there. And if you include all devices, it's like this:

Android 37.66% Windows 35.94% iOS 15.28% OS X 8.59% Unknown 0.9% Linux 0.79%

The biggest issue with the Tesla pickup is it's FUGLY. Most people don't want FUGLY.

@ATC...your analogy is exactly what will happen. Tesla will not have the same market share as Ford does, but they will have a large share of the higher end of the market, just as Apple does with smartphones.

My point exactly. And OWN the buzz.

Extremely doubtful. The people who buy the Cybercrap will be non-pickup Tesla snoots wanting to pretend they have finally found their balls. The pickup market is very traditional and very partisan. In fact, I would not be surprised if the real sales make this way off projection. Sure, you have dolts who have given Elon $100 so they can swagger and say "I've got a Cybertruck on order.", but as with the Model 3, the reservations and the sales to people were nowhere near a 1:1 match.

Nonsense. Apple does not own the smartphone market, Android does. The info I posted above was accurate at the time I posted it. iOS has a 15% share of the OS market, while Android has over 37%. Windows is the second largest OS in use at 36% (in spite of not having phones), and OS X was under 10%. In what way does Apple dominate anywhere? I'm an iPhone user, but only because Microsoft gave up on their phones. I much preferred Windows Phone, as did my wife. She was most unhappy when her Nokia Win-phone finally gave up.
