Cadillac Promises Radical Visual Design For EV Portfolio

Automobile magazine interviewed Cadillac design director Brian Smith about the style of the luxury brand’s upcoming EV portfolio. The 2016 Escala concept provides the best glimpse of the visual design for the Lyriq and Celestiq electric models.

Cadillac’s first electric vehicle will be a two-row Lyriq utility vehicle scheduled for production in China first in 2021, before arriving in the US in 2022. The Celestiq flagship electric sedan is not due until about 2025.

They have to be special or they'll be just another boring GM "could have been"... and that will be a disaster for GM...

The Lyrica and Celestina will be more pointlessness. The Lyrnique will just be a half-hearted Equinox-ish EV that GM will claim is a Cadillac. If the Celestiqua is not due until 2025 then it's 100% vapor at this point. Carbage (sic) like the CT4/5 and XT4/5/6 could kill Cadillac by then. They need to rename product NOW and get the vibe going.

CT4 / Seville
CT5 / Escala
XT6 / Elmirador
XT5 / Elencanto
XT4 / Elviaje

They need to go big, baroque, and chrome-laden.

A modern interpretation of the 1976 Seville sized like a CT6 and priced like a CT5 with a name could be the car that does for Cadillac what the Continental did for Lincoln. That car set the stage and put Lincoln back in the game.

The "Fleetwood" name could easily be used on an opulent crossover but it cannot be another reskinned Equinox, Traverse, Tahoe, or Suburban. They need a purpose-built-for-Cadillac platform.

Going EV is fine, but Cadillac still has to win the game with ICE.
