Big Brother? Volvo Reveals Limiting Maximum Speed Is About Controlling Driver Behavior
ollowing an initial announcement from March 2019, last month Volvo confirmed all new vehicles of the manufacturer will have a top speed limiter of 112 miles per hour (180 kilometers per hour). Basically, even if you buy the most powerful and sportier car of the brand (we are looking at you, Polestar), you won’t be able to exceed this speed.

Volvo’s motivation for this decision is its attempt to reduce the road fatalities and serious injuries in Volvo cars, and basically eliminate them in the next few years. But, obviously, even 112 mph (180 kph) is way above the speed limit in many countries around the world - does that mean the decision doesn’t make sense?

Safety company makes safety statement or cover for lower top end car less expensive to produce...probably both.

Whoreegg, facists are Democrats: "characterized by dictatorial power, forcible suppression of opposition, as well as strong regimentation of society and of the economy".

A 112mph / 180kph top end speed won't save anyone but the odd idiot who wants to wind out their car on the highway at 2AM. Most accidents and death occur at speeds far lower than that I would bet. People can complain all they like but when was the last time you drove over 100mph/ 160kph on a public road?

I routinely drive 150-160 KMH on the 407 when the conditions permit and my trusty Waze app running warning me of potential hindrances. I do NOT ever speed in the city where you have kids that can dart out into traffic and other hazards. Closed, divided highways with good visibility, driving conditions and traffic flow -why not?

The last time I drove over 100mph on a public road? Yesterday or the day before.
Any sportscar can exceed that speed in seconds. I don't consistently drive fast, but if I have a clear stretch of road and it is safe to open it up, why not?

Agent 009, no need to look a Polestar.
They will NOT limit their cars to 180.

By why be bothered by facts?

In Canada and following traffic along the 401/407 etc, there is the "eyes in the sky". Police monitor traffic with airplanes and you only have to run out of luck once to get caught and have the book thrown at you. Do it at your own risk.

Everyone knows that traffic deaths only occur at speeds over 112 mph, so this makes perfect sense.??

I'm not in the market for a Volvo, but I don't have a problem with it. I've always told friend's that I want a car that performs as great as possible from 0-100 mph. I never drive outside of that zone, even in the middle of nowhere Texas.
