GAME CHANGER: Musk Says Tesla Will Have Level 5 Autonomy By The End Of The Year
Tesla is "very close" to achieving Level 5 autonomous driving technology, CEO Elon Musk said Thursday, referring to the capability to navigate roads without any driver input.

"I'm extremely confident that Level 5 or essentially complete autonomy will happen, and I think will happen very quickly," Musk said in remarks made via a video message at the opening of Shanghai's annual World Artificial Intelligence Conference.

And then the Tesla will crash into something, the door locks will remain locked, and it will incinerate the passengers as usual.

LOL.

"In October 2016, Elon Musk said a Tesla vehicle would be able to drive itself across the country by the end of 2017."

It's a surprising comment, but what he is referring to I think is the completely new codebase that none of the Tesla owners (not even early access) have been exposed to. The current platform can do level 3 autonomy for sure, but level 5 is no driver in the car from point A to B. There must be some epic coding in the new neural net that is 2-4 months away (likely more).

If they can do level 5 on current hardware, it is game over for most of the competition that are spending tens of thousands per car.

IF he can do it - and that's a big if judging by his past promises, then I agree it's game over for everyone else.

Yeah 'game over' as in "it will not work as advertised, it has not been tested, and it will kill people faster than the currently, inaccurately named, /autopilot/"

Maybe the Cybertruck will be launched with the new "Level 5" and with its huge size, it will automatically mow-down and kill those people (drivers and pedestrians) who were too strong and healthy to be felled by COVID-19?

"Game-Changer" = Autopilot to be renamed "Population Controller" - it kills them all and lets God sort them out.

Meh, let's see how many passengers and pedestrians level 5 kills before we start celebrating it. Hell, I'd be happy if they'd stop ripping people off with their faulty screens. Only believe half of what Elon says, if that much.

SanJose, GM's system is still superior to Tesla according to multiple independent
sources. Secondly, he can tout Level 5 all he wants, it will be up to the NHSTA to decide where and when level 5 can be used.

It's not even close, it can only handle limited freeways as opposed to ~90% of all streets in the US. The big benefit of GM's system is the hand's free component, but I would rather have the flexibility to use the system just about anywhere including streets with stoplights and stopsigns.

Also, the system Elon is describing is a complete rewrite of the code that hopefully will be available this year.

Why do people want to sleep in their car while it is driving itself.
