Shareholder Claims 2020 Is A Lost Year For Daimler - EQC EV SUV Will Be A Flop

Inge Speich is Deka's Head of Sustainability and Corporate Governance, and Deka has a stake of around 0.5 percent of the Daimler group. During a recent shareholders meeting, Speich spoke out about the fact that he believes Mercedes’ first mass-market EV, the EQC, is a bit of a flop.

He said

‘ We look back at a lost year for Daimler. ‘

Adding that the EQC is

‘ Too late, too expensive and too boring. ‘

The Mach E will do well because it's exciting. But the German EVs--leaving the Taycan out--are class-trailing, dull, and overpriced.

The Taycan is sleek and wonderful but it's $25K overpriced at base and $100K overpriced at top.

despite COVID-19 & political & racial issues, the EQC could have been marketed better. i think the best thing about the M-B EV's is "...it’s basically a gutted (ICE vehicle) with EV internals...."

The fact that they could just make an EV using the ICE vehicles they already had is a good long-term goal to keep. Do not try to build some trendy Tesla-killer, it won't work for the long-term.

I believe that the majority of consumers would prefer to see an EV version of their favorite ICE vehicle BEFORE something brand-new is created. The new Hummer & larger Bolt will test the theory.

Ford & GM has had the tech to match Tesla's lineup for years, but Ford & GM aren't boutique brands like Tesla is. And they know how to be patient after so many years of getting beat on - from the Toyota Prius line. But when's then last time anybody mentioned the Prius?

I can't wait for the Mach E to be launched. I'm getting mine in 18 months after any initial Ford teething problems are sorted out. Maybe this time will be different but Ford as of late, has not had success with brand new product launches. In NYC we still do not see very many Lincoln Aviators though there are a bunch of new Ford Explorers around.

I'll even buy my Mach E from MDarringer's store!
