SPIED: 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Prototype Caught Almost Cammo Free

A new prototype for the 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class has been spied testing with very little camouflage, providing us with a good idea of the vehicle’s overall design.

This prototype is finished in gloss black and includes some light camouflage across the front and rear fascias. One of the first things that will strike you about the design of the new S-Class is the sportier front and rear fascias which are more angular than the outgoing model and more akin to the current Mercedes-Benz CLS.

It unfortunately looks like a mild restyle of a 2010 S Class. It will be a great car but the design stagnation is beyond belief.

Yea, there was another publication that published photos side by side and you have to be an MB fan to see the differences. The crease along the side of the car and through the door handles is the biggest change and cleans up the side.

Although this finally moves to a new modular platform called MRA II, it's obviously they've been evolving this car since 1999 W220 was designed in 1995.

I had hoped back in 2016 that the final W223 design chosen that December would be a revolutionary design, but 3 and 1/2 years later I see they had no such intention.

I guess rehashing the same theme over again makes sense, considering from W116 of 1969 to W140 of 1986, it was purely evolution of the same theme.

W220 design proposal in June 1995 broke from that tradition.

That being said, at this point the design needs to move on and revolutionize on the exterior, but stay very tasteful.

If Gordon Wagner and his team put their minds to it, I know that they could come up with something very new, yet not as tasteless as the EQS.

They failed to do that back in 2016 and instead of fixing what they did, they doubled down in the summer of 2017 when this design was frozen and mules were put to testing.

I can't honestly believe this, as I intensely dislike the interior. W240 Maybach was simply a fancier facsimile W220, on old W140 bones.

W221 was W220 meets mini-Maybach and W222 was an evolution of said theme. Where is innovation in Sindelfingen design department?

Tail lights are atrocious from the sublime W222 that recall British ultra-luxury.

Looks like I'll be hopping on the S-Class bandwagon ASAP and just keep M760i after lease. I suggest that any existing S-Class owner do the same.

The CLS is a dog in appearance - the CLS is the ugliest vehicle in MB's current lineup. HOpefully the S-Class does not use the CLS styling cues. The CLS rear end has the worst "dump in the trunk" design I have seen.

The S-Class does not do it for me anymore. I traded my S550 for a BMW 750i and I love the BMW. 750 is much lighter-feeling, the interior is much glassier, the rear seat on the 750i is raised a bit, kind of like stadium seating where the rear seat in the S-Class has the occupants feel like they are sitting in a hole.

Very happy with my 750i. I am aware that this is a dying segment but I feel that MB is losing their way with the S-Class, although many purchasers just re-lease them every 24 months.
