Lexus Steals The Show For Luxury Brand Loyalty In 2020 - Subaru Out Runs Toyota In Mainstream Brands

If a vehicle owner is loyal to a specific brand, it’s becoming more difficult for another brand to woo them away when it’s time to buy a new vehicle, according to the J.D. Power 2020 U.S. Automotive Brand Loyalty Study,SM released today.

“There are many factors that contribute to brand loyalty, ranging from the experience a customer has when purchasing the vehicle to how driving it makes them feel,” said Tyson Jominy, vice president of data & analytics at J.D. Power. “Automakers are really focused on customer retention, as evidenced by the payment plans and incentives they’ve offered since the COVID-19 pandemic broke out. Many have gone above and beyond to offer customers financial assistance during a period of economic uncertainty, which does a lot to bolster consumer confidence in their chosen brand and repurchase it in the future.”

Using data from the Power Information Network, the study, now in its second year, calculates whether an owner purchased the same brand after trading in an existing vehicle on a new vehicle. Customer loyalty is based on the percentage of vehicle owners who choose the same brand when trading in or purchasing their next vehicle.

Lexus ranks highest among luxury brands for the second consecutive year with a 48% loyalty rate. Mercedes-Benz ranks second (47.8%), followed by BMW (45.1%), Porsche (44.9%) and Audi (43.4%).

Subaru ranks highest among mass market brands and highest overall in the automotive industry for a second consecutive year with a loyalty rate of 60.5%. Toyota ranks second (60.3%), followed by Honda (58.7%), RAM (57.3%) and Ford (54.3%).

The 2020 U.S. Automotive Brand Loyalty Study calculations are based on transaction data from June 2019 through May 2020 and include all model years traded in.

Lexus has to hold on to existing customers for dear life because new ones are more interested in the Germans

Mercedes is enjoying the best of the both worlds, owner retention and new buyers due to the overwhelming success of A Class, CLA, GLA, GLC platforms in addition to performance oriented AMG products, keeping excitement and passion alive for curious buyers

Lexus has the best service of any brand that I have owned and the long term reliability and resale value has made me a huge fan of the brand even if the styling is different -but style is subjective. Germans once out of warranty are just endless money pits and unreliable compared to the Japanese offerings and after 11 BMWs I am done with the brand...

Not really, I have owned both German and Japanese and they have given me about the same number of reliability issues. Not sure if it was luck or maybe it depends on the model. My LS gave me as many problems as my first C-Class while my second C-Class (coupe) was bullet proof except for the battery which was replaced after 7 years of ownership. Additionally, my Honda Civic back in college gave me plenty of issues. As for the service, yes Lexus IS great but they are still raping you like the Germans are.

JD Power makes money by selling its endorsement.

Thus, it has to skew its data analysis--if indeed there is any analysis at all--so that the top keeps changing to sell more endorsements.

This time they clearly skewed the data pool toward women who prefer women--not that there's anything wrong with that--and of course the vibrators on wheels won.

While the desire for a Lexus may have waned since it was the #1 luxury plate in the USA years ago, the quality of the product and the excellence of the service have not. Pick any model and you will be very happy. But you won't be the envy of your neighbours or friends. Fine by me.

60% and 58% loyalty for Toyota and Honda, respectively, means much more than 60% for Subaru. Taken into raw data, that's still tons more individual buyers that stay with Toyota and Honda than with Subaru.

Same with Lexus vs. Mercedes. 48% for Lexus is not the same as 47.8% or Mercedes. Mercedes sells more. Mercedes cost more.
