It is no coincidence that Florida, Texas and Arizona all have republican governors who bowed to soon to be ex-president trump to open up, disregard science and party on. Countries that have followed science and worn masks have effectively reduced the impact of covid-19.

It’s unfortunate that a pandemic has become so political. I saw people saying here on this bread - hey it’s like the flu which kills far more people (like 17000 annually if I remember right) back when we had a few thousand deaths. Now we at 140k and the death rate is now increasing pretty rapidly as you would expect from the rising cases starting at the end of June. In addition to death though approximately 20% of the people who recover have permanent heart damage, others are left with permanent lung damage etc... Trump can call it the China virus but I think it’s fair to call this the TrumPandemic.

FAQMD “ If I get sick and need to go out I will happily wear a mask.” This virus like many viruses can infect you for weeks before you show or notice any symptoms, thus you may be spreading the virus before you know you are sick. @FAQMD - your argument sounds like the red state/blue state argument within the US. ie: Blue states provide far more tax revenue to the Feds than they get back. Red states get far more from the federal government than they contribute. Thus blue states end up propping up red states allowing them to keep artificially low taxes, provide jobs etc... all with money from blue states. It’s like welfare for red state government.

Gov Whitmer has been one of the worst Governors in the US as it relates to handling COVID. Science and data are showing that the death rate among Covid is about the same (and in some states less than) the traditional flu. We need to take a balanced approach to the virus as the following are all impacts:

1. Health issues/death from the virus
2. Increased addiction, anxiety and depression rates among kids and adults from everything being locked down. Mental illness is just as important as physical well being.
3. Loss of livelihoods as the economy has shrunk due to Covid lockdowns. These losses can increase #2.

There are far more people in category 3 who have been affected economically than from categories 1 and 2. Viewing this issue solely through the lens of the positivity rate is naive and not addressing the bigger picture.
