Experts Claim Tesla Has A Better Chance Of Landing On Mars Than Level 5 Autonomy On The Road In 2020

Elon Musk said in a video for Shanghai's annual World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) that Tesla would achieve Level 5 autonomy in 2020. Even the people that applaud everything he says took that with a grain of salt. When Automotive News spoke to specialists in safety, technology, and automotive industries about that, things got even worse for the Tesla CEO. They believe he is closer to going to Mars than selling a fully autonomous car.

Automotive News spoke to four people: Jason Levine (executive director of the Center for Auto Safety), John Krafcik (Waymo CEO), Sam Abuelsamid (principal analyst at Guidehouse Insights), and Missy Cummings (director of the Humans and Autonomy Laboratory at Duke University). All of them, with no exception, said Musk's allegations were not something achievable. And it was not just a matter of time, according to some of them.

Even if a company did achieve this level of autonomy, most governments won't allow it to be used until liability issues are solved...which will take years.

If the car is full self driving and kills a pedestrian, who is responsible? The car owner? The car manufacturer? The software engineers which wrote the code?

With Level 5, it would be the car manufacturer.

This tech should be usable first in closed systems like the Las Vegas loop.

I blame the pedestrian.

Really, you would blame the pedestrian without any context. What if the pedestrian is crossing the street at a red light, at a stop sign, or is walking on the sidewalk? Systems fail.

I'm with Carlos on this one given how many oblivious walking zombies there are.
