Retro Revival? Volkswagen Trademarks e-Beetle, e-Golf Classic, e-Karmann and e-Kübel Nameplates

After previously trademarking the e-Samba name, we’ve learned that Volkswagen has now also done so for several classics from its past. The e-Samba was the first, and we learned about it back in June, and now the manufacturer has gone ahead and also trademarked e-Beetle, e-Golf Classic, e-Karmann and e-Kübel.

We don’t know what plans the manufacturer has for all these nameplates, but they could be used in a similar way to e-Bulli. The latter is essentially just an EV converted version of the old Bulli (the classic VW bus) that has also been given a luxury makeover and will set you back €99,900 ($117,300).

My guess is that they are protecting names and nothing more.

The New New Beetle should have been an everyperson's (sic) hybrid. A New New New Beetle should be an EV priced as close to an ICE vehicle as possible.

As for the bus, "Bulli" and "Samba" are not names that resonate with Americans that colloquially refer to the Type 2 as the "Bus". So those names might work for Europe.

VW is sitting on a goldmine of heritage, but wants to waste time on I.D. Shit. An eBeetle and an eBus with retro flair would sell like mad. Follow it with an eThing and an eRabbitGTI (total Giugiaro sharpness) and VW would be sitting pretty with EV sales. The I.D. EVs will be niche vehicles at best.
