Mercedes Slashing US Line-Up Because You Only Want Crossovers And SUVs

Mercedes-Benz plans on killing off at least seven of its car models in the United States.

While speaking during a webinar in late June with dealers, Mercedes-Benz USA chief executive Nicholas Speeks confirmed that the company’s range would be reduced. While Speeks didn’t specify which models are on the chopping block, sources have a good idea of what will be axed.

Kill the 2 doors including the SL. Kill the CLA and the CLS. Sedans are dying, but traditional sedans can still work if they are values.

Seems Tesla is the only manufacturer still selling a hood number of sedans.

Sad to see where the industry continues to migrate. Feels like people no longer like the NBA and only want to watch the WNBA. How did we get here?

I live in SoCal and see tons of C-, E-, and S-Coupes so it will be sad to see them go. Especially the S-Coupe which is one of the most beautiful coupes ever made.

I’m sure Benz will have “premium options” in place for top markets and that coupe/cabriolet will always be available for a well heeled neighbor near you lol

This is just corporate responsibility, Benz has seen the best sales out of any of its rivals during this pandemic and it’s ensuring those earnings don’t go to waste so they can continue on independently without a Toyota/GM/Volkswagen at the helm

In addition to the market moving away from coupes and sedans Mercedes is in a cash crunch and cutting back in all areas of operation while trying to fund an expanding EV line. They are not alone.

I get killing off the coupes, but I still think there is a market for convertibles

THere was a time when Mercedes regularly did not have 7 different model lines in the USA. Today - they have dozens. It never made sense to me - the key to a Luxury Brand is Prestige and Exclusivity. Adding some of these low end models simply debases the Brand.

I have not seen statistics that show that at the Very High END - that the market is moving away from Prestige Sedans - from Maybach to Rolls - and using SUVs as a replacement - they may be adding to their stable with an SUV but they still have a sedan. But - having entered the lower end - that is whereSUVs are taking over. And frankly - a Renault based Mercedes to me is a contradiction in terms.

And the key to stagnation is sticking to the status quo. Do you think Bentley and RR were wrong for adding SUVs to their lineup? Or the crazy popular Lambo Urus? Or Porsche for the Cayenne and Macan (their top two selling vehicles)?
