Toyota Finally Gives In, Considers 6 Speed Manual Transmission For Supra

The new-age Toyota Supra could soon be offered with a six-speed manual transmission if a new report out of Japan is to be believed.

The Supra is a great sports car but keen driving enthusiasts have been calling for a stick shift from before the vehicle was even presented 18 months ago. So far, we have yet to be such a gearbox but according to Japanese publication Mag-X, it is on the way.

A manual will not make the Supra's horrible sales suddenly boom.

Manual sales are non material, so this will not improve sales numbers any significant amount. They need to lower the price.

Remember when folks justified a manual trans because they were faster than the Automatic transmissions? Now the Automatic trans are faster and now they say it's about feel. It was never about speed.

Not needed. Not a Toyota. This Bupra should never have gotten the green light.

I guess there was a business case made here. Cost to develop the manual version has to be minimal as they can just take it from the Z4. Not sure how much of a trickle more cars they expect to sell but it must be enough to offset whatever those development/marketing etc.. costs were and bring a profit.

I know I know I know but nothing bonds man and machine together better than a clutch pedal and a manual. It may be a tad slower but its way more rewarding. If you need to be convinced go to your local Ford dealer and ask to drive a Mustang GT500 and GT500R back to back down a B road.

Cliched bullshit.

Yes manuals are fun, but automatics with paddles are simply worlds better. You get more cogs and they can shift faster than humans. And when you want it to settle down and be a car, it does. A stick shift is an intolerable pain in stop-and-go traffic.

the car looks absolutely beautiful from the 2 that ive seen on the road, its just a shame the price is just too high and people run away. this car should start at like 35k and top out like 45-50k.

You mean I assume the 4 cylinder. But I think it would be a mistake to think a manual would be any cheaper. I just don't think they would make that many unless they kept seeing the demand grow. Most young people today have been brought up on automatics so I wonder what the actual "take rate" would be. Hyundai is now offering the Veloster N in a dual clutch auto for 2021. That is sure to expand the cars sales numbers. If the current Supra auto is not selling that well why would a manual really improve sales. I agree with most here that both models particularly the 4 cylinder is priced too high. People are perhaps waiting to see if the new 2022 BRZ/86 is any good as it is projected to start at 30K.
