Name A Sportscar That Had MORE Of An Impact On Design Than THIS.
The Porsche 928 was a sleek if rather heavy-looking 2 + 2 hatchback coupe unlike anything else on the road -- a sort of German Corvette. That may seem an invidious comparison to Porschephiles, but it’s logical, and not just because both cars have V-8s. For example, the 928’s 98.4-inch wheelbase was just 0.4-inch longer than the contemporary Chevy’s. Overall size was broadly similar, too, though the Porsche measured 10 inches shorter (175.7 inches) and offered “+2” seating where the ’Vette did not. Both were obviously high-style, high-performance sports cars, but the 928 was more weight-efficient, tipping the scales at just under 3200 pounds (versus 3500-plus). Undoubtedly, the 928’s fixed-roof unit structure was lighter than the ’Vette’s steel frame and separate fiberglass T-top body.

Many designers will tell you it was one of if not THE most influential design that changed everything going forward.

Even Steve Jobs was smitten and owned one...here's a great strory about it from Apple lore...

Jobs owned a Porsche 928 at the time, most likely influencing his opinion. This caused much debate among the two of them, according to a report on Jalopnik via an account from Folklore.org. The website, Folklore.org, tells the development process of the Original Mac.

Andy Hertzfeld, a member of the original Apple development team, recalls the discussion in March 1981 during a late night at the office. "It's got to be different, different from everything else." said Jobs to James Ferris, Apple's director of Creative Services. “For some reason, they were talking about cars.” Hertzfeld recalls.

"We need it to have a classic look, that won't go out of style, like the Volkswagen Beetle", I heard Steve tell James.

"No, that's not right.", James replied. "The lines should be voluptuous, like a Ferrari.”

"Not a Ferrari, that's not right either", Steve responded, apparently excited by the car comparison. "It should be more like a Porsche!" referring to his Porsche 928.

So tell us, can you name a sportscar that had a bigger influence in future designs than the 928?

I disagree with the premise of your post Agent001, but I appreciate the attempt. I don't think the 928 as cool as it was, has had any influence on the design world or the design of other cars. The psychedelic seat inserts are super cool too. The 9ft serpentine belt that this engine has makes it a bit of a nightmare as a used car buy.

That's cool. 00R disagrees with me too. I threw one out there. The headline says name one better. But, in my discussions with many of the top designers, they have all said it had a big impact.

And if I didn't choose that one we couldn't have had that cool Steve Jobs tidbit as well. ;)

Ahh the bullshittery of the agents pretending to be deep in the know and inventing rabbit holes to go down all while on other site stories of new prototypes caught by the real spies are featured.

Not sure exactly what designs the 928 influenced. A stretch might be the backend of the AMG GT. I really don't see the 928's influence in any car designs since 1980.

I think a car like the Pantera had more influence on design. So many sports cars coming after it had the flying wedge with bulging arches look.

I really like the look of the 928 but not sure I follow either other than the story about Apple. Has to be unique like a VW bug, sexy like a Ferrari but not too sexy so let's go with a 928 type middle ground? Some things about the 928 are pretty cool. One is its size. From most pictures it looks pretty large but up close it is really a darn small car. Another is those flared front fenders. Not sure if that had been done as nicely as this prior to the 928. The squared off wheel arches... like a 69 Camaro. Exposed pop up headlights... that was pretty crazy but also cool in its own way. I would not mind a GTS version to partner my 850. Unfortunately not much of the styling bits I like seem to have influenced anyone else car designs that I know of.

It was a small car indeed. My Mom's SO at the time picked me up in his when I was in grade school. I saw in the back and had ZERO leg room. And the rear had a center console that rose to 3/4 the seat height, so it was so tall that one could stretch across the two seats.

Harley Earl's 1938 Buick YJob concept car set the design direction for the next three decades going forward and adopted by all manufacturers but a very few.

Then it married a Pacer and gave birth to the Panamera

The 928 has very interesting surface detailing...(I LOVE the hatchback quarter windows - really amazing how they exist in three dimension)...and Porsche clearly sweated the design details on this one (and not just by spec'ing psychedelic fabrics for the interior).

The 928 is a unique work of art, but I'm not sure it was a design that necessarily inspired others.

Some could even say that the 928 was inspired by the 1970 to 1973 fastback Mustangs (Mach I) which had a similar rear haunches treatment.

I had one for many years. Incredible car.

I'm waiting for a Panamera coupe.

Panamera coupe and cabriolet cannot come soon enough. Porsche thinks it would cannibalize 911 and perhaps Bentley but the fact is, it will kill a bunch of BMW and MB sales. There will be zero impact on 911 and in fact many 911 people would just buy a Panamera Cabriolet in addition to their 911 coupe.

Section 31 JTK: Panthera for me is the one influencing all sport cars. You are right.

If anything, 924, not 928

But it was really heavily influenced by 1968 Ferrari 365 GTB4

THe people here are simply not old enough to have seen the evolution of the "Sports car" if somehow a 928 is considered a trend setter.

THe Triumph TR series and the MGA set the style for two seat Sports cars for decades.
