Tesla Model 3 Takes Top Quality Spot In China After Placing Dead Last In US - What Does That Tell You?

A recent survey showed that Tesla’s Made in China Model 3 was ranked as the highest quality sedan in the second quarter of 2020 in the country, citing only .7 complaints per 10,000 vehicles. While the data shows the Model 3 is striking a chord with its Chinese consumers, it also shows the quality of the company’s products that are manufactured at Giga Shanghai.

Chinese quality complaint company CheZhiWang surveyed 38 total sedans that are available in the world’s largest automotive market. The survey included both foreign and domestic models.

Possible explanations:

1. The test methodologies are not congruent.
2. Chinese workers produce a higher quality product than the lovely children of God building Teslas in tents.

Something is screwy. In the U.S., Tesla suffers from very high number of problems.

According to the JD Power Initial Quality Study, which measures vehicle quality in the first 90 days of ownership, Tesla cars suffered 250 problems per 100 vehicles as reported by customers, compared to an industry average of 166 problems.

Many of JD Power problems are not problems at all.

Ever wonder why they wont let you take delivery of a car without a through go over by a technical delivery specialist?

People would not read the manual and couldn't figure out things like setting up Bluetooth on their phone. So even though it worked fine, they called it defect because they were too lazy to figure it out.

Sadly that Bluetooth issue is weighed the same as the transmission falling out of the car.

Maybe the answer is that domestic ChiCom cars are crap. So the crappy Tesla is the least crappy. That still doesn't make it any less of a crappy car.

If you had read the article, you would know that the survey included foreign brands as well.

Just goes to show that an optimized production facility such as Giga Shanghai can go a long way toward improving quality.

Just wait until Giga Berlin and Giga Austin.

Just like their COVID-19 numbers, the Chinese lied about the survey.

This has to be BS...there is no way there is a spread that big in defects (10x difference) between the Tesla and other well engineered vehicles (Toyota yaris, Audi A3, VW Polo).

I think the Chinese Tesla team is not only being overly cautious, but let's face it... China is better at manufacturing than the US is. You iPhone is made in China, your TV is likely made in China, your laptop is likely made in China. The crazy thing is Chinese labor is not even dramatically less expensive per hour, but labor gets a lot more done in the same time and at a higher quality than in the US.

There is a great documentary on Netflix called "American Factory." It follows a multinational company that expands from China to the US and shows the cultural and operational differences between a Chinese and US factory, the good and the bad on both sides. It won the 2020 Academy Award for best Documentary.
