A Wewahitchka man walked into a car dealership in Okaloosa County and left in a Porsche after paying with a check printed from his home computer, authorities say.

Casey William Kelley, 42, was arrested Wednesday for grand theft of a motor vehicle and uttering a false banknote.

He also tried to buy Rolex watches with a bad check, according to an arrest report from the Walton County Sheriff’s Office.

The paying by check thing--I find--curious.

We have people who will put a $150K vehicle on a credit card and then pay themselves off. We have people who make the transfer out of their account to ours electronically as we're sitting in the office. And yes, we take checks from people with whom we've done business in the past.

We simply would not sell a car to someone with whom we have no experience who walks in and hands us a check. Did the dealer NOT do its due diligence to vet the customer?

Wealthy people have no issue proving their wealth. If we've dealt with someone previously then sure, we'd take a check without any additional thought. We've "sold" cars without any financial transaction because they were Christmas presents and the buyer wants to surprise the spouse, but we vetted the buyer.

Just out of curiosity but do you charge the customers a service fee to cover the merchant fees?
