Edmunds Says WHOA! On The Tesla Killer Narrative For Cadillac's New LYRIQ
By now, the lead that Tesla enjoys in the electric vehicle market is so notable that the idea of “Tesla Killers” from legacy automakers has become quite difficult to justify. This has not stopped some publications from pursuing such a narrative, of course. But sometimes, “Tesla Killer” narratives, much like the vehicles that they represent, have a tendency to fizzle out.

General Motors’ luxury brand, Cadillac, recently unveiled its latest all-electric vehicle, the LYRIQ. A midsize SUV that’s expected to be priced somewhere in the $70,000 range, the LYRIQ is filled to the brim with the best that GM could offer. It’s projected to have a range of at least 300 miles from the company’s “Ultium” batteries, it’s fitted with the company’s Autopilot-rivaling SuperCruise feature, and it’s equipped with augmented reality heads-up display functions.

The 2022 on sale date is curious. Why show the vehicle now?

To show they aren't out of the game. But if you looked close, you saw if released today it isn't competitive, so how is it going to be 2 years from now...

While this looks to be a great vehicle, it is not a "Tesla Killer"...at this point Tesla sells very few Model S/X. To be a Tesla Killer they need to get compelling product into the $35-50K segment. GM is following the same mistake Audi made...they should have brought the lower priced vehicle first. Ford is the only legacy automaker that has played their cards right so far in the EV race.

Only a designer would think brake lights / turn signals on the side of the car (instead of the rear) would be a good thing.

Why did Cadillac have to make the Cadillac LYRIQ so hard on the eyes?

It's a killer concept, again let's see how it looks in late 2022 and how it will compare to the Plaid Model S/X.

The S and X are HORRIBLY outdated and a nip/tuck won't do it.

But, if this comes out looking like an Equinox with Cadillac badges then it's doomed. I has to be identical to the concept to have that "Suddenly it's 2030" vibe.

Model X and S are going to heavily refresh in 2021 for the 2022 model. New interiors!

They need total replacements with clean sheet styling. The S needs to ditch its bloated Fusion styling and become something that looks the part of a 7 Series / S Class competitor.

The X need to look more like the GLS or X7 and it needs to get rid of the sparrow doors.

Tesla is incapable of a styling home run.
