Hyundai Launches IONIQ As It's Own EV Brand

Hyundai announced the launch of IONIQ as its own new electric brand and confirmed three new electric cars to populate the lineup within the next four years

The Korean automaker already has the IONIQ, an electric sedan produced with three different powertrains: hybrid (HEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and all-electric (BEV).

The vehicle has found some success and the all-electric version has been praised for its efficiency, but Hyundai is now talking about a “Rebirth of IONIQ.”

As with Genesis, this will be all about the marketing. Ioniq would be a good brand to place in Genesis dealers, except that Hyundai has 100% botched the marketing of Genesis by having no real dealer channel.

Will Kia stupidly come up with their own brand next?

I'm 100% convinced that Hyundai will deliver an excellent product, but H-K just does not understand marketing one iota.

Marketing is a bit overrated when the products sell themselves. Besides isn't it up to the dealers to move metal?

Dumbass! (1) There are essentially no Genesis dealers. (2) The franchise the dealer has with the manufacturer is predicated on a number of commitments, one of which is that the manufacturer will market the product.

You think Kia should bring up their own brand? With what Stinger, K900 and that EV currently on spyshots?

This would be similar to turning Prius into it's own brand, which Toyota almost did. I wish they didn't already release an "Ioniq" that was pretty mediocre, not a great way to start the brand. The good news is so few people know that car exists that they should be able to move past that. The Kona is a great sub-$40k CUV, perhaps they should rename it to the Ioniq3 ASAP to keep with their naming convention.
