STUD OR DUD? Mercedes Brings High End Ambient Lighting To The Interior Of The New S-Class

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class has always had one of the best interiors, whether it be the swaths of high-end leather, the latest technology, or the sheer amount of features on offer. But the company promises an even more upscale experience with its upcoming model – Mercedes has even gone so far as to dub the inside of the upcoming 2021 S-Class a "third place." That is, a refuge between home and work.

One thing to look forward to when stepping inside of the 2021 S-Class is the new ambient lighting. Hundreds of fiber optics made of a totally transparent coating line the door panels and floorboards, each fiber optic fixture consisting of about 250 LED lights. The goal, Mercedes says, is for the new ambient lighting fixtures to create a single continuous line of light throughout the vehicle.

This sort of interior lighting seems to be a growing trend in the German makes. Not sure where the attraction lies.

I disagree, the current gen S Class when it launched with that ambient lighting and gorgeous interior nearly 7 years ago, it immediately separated itself from direct rivals BMW, Audi, Lexus, Jaguar and started being compared to Bentley/Rolls Royce...

ALL of the above have now followed in the S Class steps and are stepping up interior lighting/customization to another level

I recently drove a new E class for a few days and thought the multi-color LED cabin lighting was ridiculous. Looked like something from a high-school kid's gaming PC. Not classy at all.

I already have it in my new Audi and it is a very nice look and very luxurious.

This is the direction that interiors will be going and I appreciate Mercedes and other brands trying to step outside the traditional. And this is better executed than Audi's current interiors. However, I don't like the placement or design or the vents.

I don’t mind the ambient light because you can adjust the color and intensity. What I don’t like is the vents. The ones above the screens are slightly off center and the verticals corner vents just don’t look good to me.

Love the blue ambient light at night which creates a mood and greater sense of occasion in luxury vehicles.

Why are the vents 'off-center'? If it was my car, that would bug me, every time I looked at it.

Because the only person who is going to notice that they are off center is the person sitting on the rear hump LOL.
