WATCH: Cadillac Confirms Super Cruise Automated Driving Is Only Free For 3 Years

A GM spokesperson got back to us this morning confirming the news that Cadillac’s Super Cruise hands-free driving system comes with a 3-year trial before requiring a subscription fee to continue to operate on the cars equipped with this feature.

“Yes, Super Cruise requires a vehicle connectivity plan in order to operate, and that plan is offered free for three years on current products,” said GM spokeswoman Katie Minter.  “The first 2018 Cadillac CT6 owners with Super Cruise will see this free access plan expire in September.”

No one will own a Cadillac that long.

Not really. Most Cadillacs are leased not bought so, 3 years is not an issue.

Too much product liability to allow old "super cruise" hardware and software out there to kill people once obsolete.

Compare the tech (processing speed, cameras, etc.) in a 2014 Model S versus today and there is only so much that 'over the air' software updates can do.

Welcome to the future - where in-car tech expires to prevent carnage.

Every Tesla built since August 2017 supports the latest hardware. All the cameras and sensors are the same as 2017 btw, it is just swapping out the Autopilot CPU ($2.5k or free with FSD upgrade). They'll probably do one more CPU upgrade in 2021 or 2022 before upgrading the cameras (2023 or 2024). You don't need super high resolution as higher resolution requires infinitely more processing power. It's better to have extra redundancy and a deeper neural net for now, so you're pretty safe with current AP hardware.

I'm not sure how upgradeable (if at all) SuperCruise is yet. The current implementation can't even change lanes.
