Toyota Ceases V8 Development - Focusing On Turbocharging

A report out of Japan claims that Toyota is canceling the development of its V8 engines, which may spell the end of the long-awaited Lexus LC F, at least with a twin-turbo eight-cylinder as was initially expected.

Toyota, like other car manufacturers, has been adversely impacted by the coronavirus pandemic and this has reportedly prompted it to shift its focus to turbocharged V6 engines and electrified powertrains rather than continue to forge ahead with V8s.

It's not like Toyota produced any iconic V8s to mourn.

True but the V8's they had like in the LS were super reliable and good for a very long life with little to no maintenance/repairs and regular gas. Some people like myself prefer reliability and longevity over extreme performance as we fossilize and our priorities change.

Ford, Chevy, and Dodge have much more iconic V8s that give up NOTHING in reliability to Toyota. Nice try, but your attempt at sneering falls flat.

A turbo V-6 engine will never equal the sweet sound of an aspirated V-8. Then again Toyota is not a performance driven brand despite its advertising rhetoric
and ambitions. Just look at its current offerings as evidence.

I'd rather buy used than buy a new car or truck with a turbocharged engine. It never ends well if you keep them longer than 3 years.

Agree with all of the above

More cylinder = more longevity. Turbos while fun are just expensive ticking time bombs.

Good for Toyota

They should also look into combination of I4 engine with elec motor, like what MB has been developing

If there will be no more V8's they should develop their on Inline 6's.
Hint:
2FZ for Land Cruiser and Tundra
3JZ for IS and Supra

Driving in circles. Morbidly obese women in tank tops. Men drunk on cheap-assed beer. #NASCAR
