Ford Plans To Keep Mustang In Production For At Least Another Decade

After the discontinuation of the Fusion sedan, the Mustang is now effectively Ford’s only car available in the United States. It’ll remain like this for at least several more years and it’s probably safe to predict the sports car will continue to be one of the brand’s core offerings. So much so that Ford wants to keep it alive for at least another decade.

A new report from Automotive News claims the automaker will move to a longer, eight-year lifecycle for the next-generation Mustang. It is supposed to go into production in the fourth quarter of 2022 as a 2023 model.

There's ZERO reason the Mustang couldn't go full EV at some point.

An 8-year product cycle is perfectly fine, but at year 4 there needs to be a major restyling rather than a restyling that was nearly impossible to see as in the current Mustang's tenure.

But that restyling has to be a step forward unlike the disastrous restyling of the 2005 Mustang when it was updated.

I learned a long time ago that being first to market or last one standing reaps greater financial reward. The Mustang was the first pony car and should be the last to go full EV only.

Well, with Idiot Mary killing the Camaro and no new Challenger in sight...

There's some speculation that there will be 3 Mustangs: ICE coupe, Mach E, and an EV coupesedan that could in turn produce an EV coupe.

@darringer

GM is the best run American auto company. Deal with it.

Yeah that's why they lost Europe, and are struggling in Asia/India. Their vehicles are class trailing. Mary needs to go.

Opel supposedly had not a snowball's chance in hell of being profitable, yet Peugeot made it profitable in a blink. "GMDAT" is a struggling disaster while other Korean companies are doing well. And so on.

Lol. That's why they make billions in profit while Ford loses $800 million in just the last quarter.

Lots of CEO's have made their company profitable by cutting people, markets, products, development projects, etc. Problem is, to paraphrase Thatcher, "Sooner or later you run out of things to cut". They end up with a much smaller and uncompetitive company.

Next gen Mustang needs to be full EV or at least have an EV variant beyond the Mach E. Can share the platform with Lincoln.

Ford tried to kill the Mustang years ago and put the Mazda designed Probe in it's place. I remember the push back from their customers.
