Scratch One More Soft Top: Mini Convertible Will Not Get A Next Generation

You could be forgiven if you haven’t thought about the Mini Convertible in a little while—only 4,031 of these were sold last year in the U.S., down almost a quarter from the year before, though 5,334 in 2018 still wasn’t much. Anyway, Mini is reportedly getting rid of it.

This is sad insomuch as you care about Mini and convertibles, and a seemingly smaller and smaller portion of people in the US actually do, with Mini sales down 17 percent across the board in North America last year with only 36,092 Minis sold total, or about as many Fits Honda sold alone.

People who own this convertible love it but sadly not enough to sustain new model development. It is models like this as in the past that will be missed in terms of adding some spice to the broad automotive landscape.

Not a big problem...the CPO market can take care of it.

Mini is such a dead brand...even "Mini of the Hamptons" gave up the franchise a few months ago (the Six Sigma Auto group operates the highly successful BMW, Audi, Porsche, and Jeep/Dodge franchises along a stretch of Montauk Highway in Southampton, NY. If Mini brand doesn't work in the Hamptons, where does it work?

My friend at BMW Hamptons told me that although there are Mini's in Hamptons, no-one drives them because they are so impractical. He said its rare to have a Mini Convertible that accumulates more than 1,000 to 2,000 miles per year - its people's third/fourth/fifth car that is used for the beach run and that's it.

BMW Hamptons is still happy to service all the now-orphan Hamptons Mini's (nearest dealer for warranty work is about 70 miles away in Huntington, NY) but he said Mini franchise was just awful. I'm sure with that stellar British Mini quality, they will have ample, non-warranty service work despite the low miles.
