WATCH: Can The 2020 Genesis G90 Stand Shoulder To Shoulder In The Full-Size Luxury Segment?

You know the major players when it comes to full-size luxury sedans: Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz – you might even be able to throw Lexus into the mix. And there’s a reason those brands are so successful: because their full-size options are very good. But of the outliers, the 2020 Genesis G90 might be one of our favorites.

Not only does the new Genesis G90 look great (even if this latest model is just a heavy facelift), but it does almost exactly what its competitors do, only at a more affordable price. The G90 is stylish, luxurious, and loaded with some really good tech – all for under $80,000 as tested.

The real test is if you adjusted the Monroney sticker to say $120K, would your judgment of the car be different? Styling, no way could it pass for over $80K. Luxury? I think it has a lot of great qualities to say it's a strong contender. Performance? Not even close. Durability? Based on my experience with the Stinger, I would find it suspect.

Or the converse, and adjusted the sticker on an S-Class or 7 Series to $80K, would it truly be competitive? I truthfully don't know. But so many times when Genesis' models are mentioned, it's typically accompanied with "for the money". So is it a value proposition or are these cars truly "equal" rivals?

No - Sorry

In the Prestige Luxury class - you need both. Over the years there were many cars that could easily compete with ROlls ROyce on numbers - but they were never A Rolls. THere are lots of less expensive cars today that can compete with true Supercars on Numbers - but even a Corvette will never be a Bugatti or a Ferrari as well. (Although that is a little closer).

Even a Japanese car cannot quite reach the level of Prestige that an S Class has - although the Toyota Century certainly can be close - but still no Mercedes.

THere will always those who will say it is a lot like a Mercedes for a whole lot less - but a Ford Granada was NEVER even close to Mercedes. And a car from Korea might sell there - (ANd not well there either) - but they are not in the same class.

Hyundai is WAY too conservative with Genesis. They don't know what it should be, so they went inoffensive and wound up with a total lack of focus..

They want to be what Lexus used to be before Lexus lost its way, but they are too timid to fully embrace it.

Given the tiny volume that Genesis will have, I'd have skewed the brand sharply toward a niche and then make a big splash in that niche.

I'd have cast Genesis as a "muscle premium" brand of the premiums. The G80 should offer M5ish performance for a base 5 Series price along with styling designed to appeal to 30somethings not 60somethings.

That solely "muscle performance" stance would have given Genesis an image that no other brand inhabits exclusively. That would then create the impression that Genesis has one mission rather than many and having a defining character would be a boon.

Adding in EVs under this kind of Genesis would play into the drag-strip Tesla crowd and so on.

The G90 is a good product but it's soooooo unfocused. It's a Continental that wants to be an S Class.
