Tesla's Latest Software Update Will Warn Drivers They Are Speeding

Tesla has started pushing a new version of its software update to now visually detect speed limit signs and more.

For a while, there has been speculation about to what degree Tesla was using GPS data versus actual detection of speed limit signs in order to detect speed limits for its Autopilot features.

Now this new update gives us some answers.

Nanny state.

It was all GPS based before, now it will actually read the signs and render them as posts on the screen (I haven't seen the UI for this yet, don't have the update). I don't think this will change how fast you can push Autopilot (up to 90mph on highways, freeways, and expressways and 5mph over the speed limit on city streets).

Autopilot 1 cars with Mobileye did speed sign recognition back in 2014. Then Tesla decided to be Tesla and do their own ADAS, took years to match the Mobileye capabilities.

That's true, I think this was the final legacy feature that needed to be added. They had their priorities right though getting city autopilot done before this. Next step is the new neural net which will give "nav on autopilot" capabilities in the city. That's far, far beyond what anyone is planning even for 2021.

So what. My car already has that function.

So does mine, as has the last several cars I've had. But it doesn't read signs. It's data embedded in the navigation database. And those are notorious for being out of date. Recognizing the actual sign is far more accurate.

Also should support temporary signs like construction zones.

This once again proves that Tesla "drivers" are numb, self-absorbed idiots.
