VW Says They Arent Targeting Tesla With New ID.4 Crossover - Well Who Are THEY Targeting?
It's taken Volkswagen five years to bring to market a viable electric vehicle - after the e-Golf and e-Up acted as nothing more than fillers - but as far as the North American market is concerned, the wait is going to be even longer. The ID.3 hatchback will not make its way across the ocean, with the ID.4 crossover set to mark Volkswagen's revival over there.

The company is obviously anxious about this potentially pivotal moment, so it's trying to build up the expectation as best it can. Case in point this talk at the highest level between Herbert Diess, CEO of VAG, and Scott Keogh, Volkswagen Group of America CEO.

For this to be true it's going to have to be at least $10k less than the Model Y.

i don't understand how VW still hasn't grasp the art of industry competition...and that if you build something very similar to a vehicle that already exists, naturally, direct comparisons & industry competitions will be made immediately.

If the ID-4 is an EV CUV similar in size to the Model Y, then it will be compared to the Tesla vehicle.

Simply saying, "oh, we know the 2 EV's are similar, but it wasn't our intention to compete against it," doesn't quite seem like a believable corporate statement.

If they are smart they should be targeting crv and rav4...if they can be price competitive with those vehicles then Tesla will be an afterthought.

Granted VW has had it's share of misses as have all car makers - but sometimes these articles seem to be written just to piss on everyone's parade. Turn the tables around and I bet if VW had said that the ID.4 competes directly with Tesla, this article would be replaced by one questioning VW and how dare they make such a claim.

Remarkable what VW executives will say when their career is on the line. VW has nothing unusual or market leading to offer here, no super enhanced range, no breath taking exterior styling, nothing special about the interior. So another attempt to have an electric car without anything that compels the general public that the ID4 or owning one will be special, unique or part of a trend (like Tesla).. the charging station garb is BS unless you live in big cities, so I give them the same chances at success as the Audi Etron, which Keogh ducked out of the Audi seat just in time to make that mess someone else's fault. Corporate ladder climbing gets really tough when you are on the top of the pyramid. ID4 might knock a few big egos down a peg or two.

Frankly VW may be worried more about the Korean and Chinese EV crossovers (i.e. Niro, Kona and MG ZS EVs) that have been hugely successful in Europe. There isn't much of a gap between those and the premium segment for VW to occupy with the ID.4 and variants.
