Just to be clear: We just drove the ID.3 and had a chat - there is no deal/cooperation in the making. Herbert Diess

Right, Elon was bored driving his Model S so he figured he'd give the ID.3 a whirl.

Happy suck up to Elon day to all my German friends!

Imagine if VW and Ford inked a deal with Tesla.

Nothing new here. Competitors always drive each others cars. Did Ford benchmark the Jeep Wrangler while developing the new Bronco. The current Mustang was benchmarked against the BMW 3 series and not the Camaro. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Benchmarking definitely goes on, BUT Tesla needs the insulation of a big manufacturer as the big guys start putting EVs on the market and getting it right.

The Mach E will be a great reason NOT to buy a Model Y, for example.

By all accounts, the Mach E is a job well done. If VW's architecture is good as well, an ideological and component sharing between Ford, VW, and Tesla would benefit all. VW/Ford needs Tesla as much as Tesla needs VW/Ford.

The low end of the market needs something like this. Hope it takes off, smog is back in the Bay Area this weekend (no longer caused by just fires).

Umm...competitors do not get to routinely drive each other’s prototype vehicles. This Deiss guy has some sort of infatuation with Elon Musk. There is no way VW could afford to buy any significant interest in Tesla at the current prices.
