I would put Bill's comments with the USA astronauts who said Elon could never build a rocket or capsule good enough to be used by NASA. Ignore the doubters and continue on with you dream.

Long haul trucks will be the last to be viable because of battery weight and charging time. Battery trucks for local deliveries are more viable at this point.

I've always thought that instead of charging stations they should have some automated hot swappable battery station. Of course someone would have to develop a car/truck/Semi that has that capability as well. Drive in, some automated machine pulls your existing discharged battery and puts the charged battery in. you are on your way in 3min.

30 years from now it might be possible to have enough Electricity available to charge all of these Semi's in rural areas of the Interstate system - so YES - Musk is correct - it could happen - ANd Gates it right - NOT that soon

Frankly - Instead of Electric vehicles and self driving cars -I am waiting for FLYING vehicles - although that is unlikely to happen in any big way in my lifetime.

Hell the FAA can barely manage autonomous drones much less commuter traffic.

Flying cars will need far more power than regular ones. I think we'll see tons of loop tunnels before flying cars but I'm optimistic you'll see both in your lifetime =) Electric planes are 10 years out too.

On what basis is Bill Gates qualified to make a prediction of this type?

Gates has become one of the richest person in the world by selling DEFECTIVE, HALF BAKED, BUGGY products. Where else could someone sell defective, faulty product and get rich rather than being thrown in prison.

Their goals are the same, as long as they both contribute to getting to the finish line at at least one of them makes it, it won't matter so much how they get there.
