SPIED: Mid-Engine Toyota MR2 Successor Around The Corner?

SPIED: Mid-Engine Toyota MR2 Successor Around The Corner?
Toyota is hard at work on the next MR2 successor to take on the next GT-R and NSX - at least according Japanese media. When are we likely to see it, how much will it cost, and what will power this beast?

Is this a potential winner?

If this is real, then this would be Toyota now taking the C8 Corvette seriously. They probably thought the rear-engine Vette was going to be a huge industry joke (internally). "Taking the MR2 upmarket" could mean just upping it's sport car status...not making it a luxury car.

It would be a weird thing to do considering current market/economic conditions & the SUV trends. But not completely out of Toyota's experience/expertise wheelhouse. If they really intend to remake the MR2 into a brand halo flagship car, that would mean they intend to make a Lexus luxury version b/c...hey thats what Toyota typically does. And if you can make 1, why not make 2 for half the R&D costs.

Not until Toyota buys Lotus

It would be great to see an MR2 replacement. Not sure this is it though. Hopefully they are looking at other designs.

Sports and Toyota/Lexus do not belong in the same sentence. None of their "sports" cars have ever been competitive.

Not sure taking MR2 name upmarket is right move. MR2 stands for reasonably priced good value mid engine entry level sports cars. Its a market segment now unfulfilled with good potential. Going upmarket against multiple tough competition with a down market name connotation and heritage seems to me the wrong approach if not the wrong segment to invest in.

This: "MR2 successor to take on the next GT-R and NSX..." is why it will fail.

It would be like Porsche saying it's designing a 914 successor to be their halo car.
