UK To Tryout Gutted Highway Speed Limits To Improve Air Quality

The world slowing down is not necessarily a bad thing, especially it helps with safety and air pollution. With that in mind, the Highways England project wants to examine what effect slowing down motorway traffic by just 10 mph (16 km/h) might have on the air we breathe.

A new 60 mph (96 km/h) limit will be imposed for at least 12 to 15 months, displayed on roadside signs and enforced 24/7, as reported by AutoExpress.

At the cost of lost time but new highs in traffic tickets.

Can someone please explain this.. I would think that emissions on most IC vehicles are highest during acceleration and would be greatest in stop/go city traffic and lowest during cruise at low RPM. Is there really that much difference in smog output at a steady 70mph vs. 60mph with modern vehicles? And is that really worth wasting time over?

As far as speed limits and enforcement are concerned, I'm glad I live where enforcement doesn't seem to be a legislative priority and seems to let the traffic move at a self determined pace. On the 4 interstates that run through or around my area, the speed limits range from 55-70mph yet the traffic on all is moving at 80mph when it's not rush hour.

I think it is a trade off, increased emissions due to higher RPM vs the longer time on the road emitting pollution at a reduced level.

People will still go 10kph over, so there may be little different in average speeds. Police usually only pull you over if you are asking for it by being 20-30kph over the limit. I think I have had 2 speed tickets the entire time I have been driving and both fall into this category.

This is the UK where speed limits are strictly enforced via cameras.
