BUYER BEWARE! Thinking Of Buying A USED KIA Or HYUNDAI? There's A CATCH. And It's HUGE!
You guys all know I like to rotate my cars and always be putting something new in the Auto Spies stable.

I just put my 2020 KIA Telluride up for sale and I've been getting a HUGE amount of activity.

Prices are crazy on them and my 1.5 year old Telly with 22k miles are going through dealer auctions for, get this...OVER original MSRP. NOT kidding. The most recent few are closing at $48k at the Manheim auctions.

2020 KIA Telluride for sale

On with the story...

A guy texts me who is interested and we're negotiating price and details and I mention it still has plenty of warranty left.

At that point he says to me that KIA and HYUNDAI warranties are NOT transferable to the second owner!

WHAT? Why had I NEVER heard of that or read any major media calling this out?

I thought to myself he HAD to be wrong so I called my KIA dealer service dept. And the nice lady said sir, he is correct, the 5/60 bumper to bumper warranty goes BYE-BYE.

I said, you mean if I buy a friends used Stinger with 4k miles I'm SOL on warranty? She said that would be correct. There still is the powertrain warranty that no one on earth has ever successfully collected on but that is still there. And I asked is it the same on a used Hyundai? AFFIRMATIVE.

So my question on this fine Sunday is would knowing that TOTALLY take you out of the game of considering a Hyundai or KIA on the used market?

I know it would for me.

Spies, discuss.

If word gets out wide-spread of this expect resale values to collapse.

most definitely!

i wonder if Hyundai/Kia provides some kind of "extended warranty" package instead? besides, i won't even consider ANY used/pre-owned vehicle if I cant get some kind of extended warranty for at least 36 or 48 months. unless I won the lotto or became newly rich, no vehicle today is worth the hassle.

It's actually more nuanced than "if it's used and resold, the warranty's gone".

Mdarringer,

Your answer sounds like one from a politician.

And if you want to overpay for my Telluride to resell to some customer inside of the orange curtain, autospies@icloud.com. ;)

If the vehicle returns to a Kia dealer as a trade in, it can become a CPO.

I have no interest in helping someone who is foolish enough to BUY and car and then dump it on a LEASE timeframe.

LOL who in their right mind would buy a used KIA/Hyundai in that case?

From a simple google search the 5/60 bumper to bumper warranty is still in effect for the second buyer, and the 10/100 powertrain warranty is reduced to 5/60 for the second buyer. It is NOT a complete loss of any warranty coverage...as usual the morons working at the dealership are completely clueless.

The bigger question is what kind of moron would pay over MSRP for a used Kia Telluride...unless it is someone trying to export it to another market.

Uh, you may want to research better..."Can I Give the Kia Warranty to a Second Owner? Yes. It's that simple. The 10-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty is switched to a 5-year/60,000-mile limited powertrain warranty when the vehicle is sold, with the remainder transferring to the new owner."

It's no longer bumper to bumper for the next owner.

So your entitled panties are in a wad: GET OVER IT. Why should you care about the next person? Your faux concern is just that faux. You're just bitching to have something to bitch about.

The reason the manufacturer takes away the all-inclusiveness is simple. When you bought the vehicle new, Kia was able to guarantee it because it went from them to you. When it passes from 1st owner to 2nd owner in order to continue the "Cadillac" warranty, Kia would have to accept the potential abuse inflicted by the first owner and take responsibility for issues entirely outside of their control.

My advice to you would be to LEASE.

Yes and below that it says the 5 year/60k basic warranty also Can I Give the Kia Warranty to a Second Owner?
Yes. It’s that simple.

“The 10-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty is switched to a 5-year/60,000-mile limited powertrain warranty when the vehicle is sold, with the remainder transferring to the new owner. The following warranties have their remainders transferred as well:

5-year/60,000-mile limited basic warranty.
5-year/100,000-mile limited anti-perforation warranty.
5-year/60,000-mile roadside assistance plan.“

My employee has a Kia Optima - at 99,500 miles the engine stopped working and they installed a new one without complaint, so at least one person on the planet they honored the 100,000 mile warranty.

For many years of MY life - cars got 1 year/12,000 mile warranties - some were less. Since YOU can buy extended service Agreement with Various options - even on a used vehicle - you would add that into the price if you really want coverage.

At least Three Big Auto Aftermarket repair companies had similar "Car ownership" or "lifetime" warranties - AAMCO Transmissions, Midas Muffler, and Meineke Muffler had similar warranties that could not transfer to a new owner.

This is just a matter of Let the Buyer Beware -and ask questions like this.

@MDarringer - YOU are so "faux" - if it were any other brand (that you don't sell to make a living) you would be posting within seconds bitching your panties off. You give new meaning to the word hypocrite.

I don’t know what the big deal is...I don’t care for Kia vehicles but even when transferred the warranty is better than almost any other car out there. The transferred warranty is 5 year 60k bumper to bumper, the ONlY change is loss of the 10/100 powertrain warranty which becomes 5/60. People need to research the facts before making brash statements.
