NJ RAISES Gas Tax Due To DROP In Driving During The Pandemic. Crazy? And Which States Are NEXT?
Drivers in New Jersey will soon be paying more at the pump. State officials say the nine-cent increase that takes effect Thursday is meant to offset lower consumption trends due to the pandemic.

Residents say it seems like New Jersey loves sticking it to them. Two weeks ago, tolls increased and now, the gas tax is increasing. And of course, residents aren’t happy about it.

Vote democrat and have more taxes on the real economy (middle class people actually doing real work) in the middle of a massive recession.

Vote republican for more tax cuts for the 1% and pumping up the stock market, instead of using that money to help small-medium businesses and people get back up and running.

Pick your poison.

If you have a 401k or pension plan, pumping up the stock market is in your favor.

Yes except those 1% are the business owners that create the vast majority of employment (small biz). Why shouldn’t they be rewarded for risking capital and all the other sacrifices one makes starting a business?

Then again taxation is a wonderful problem to have as it means you are making bank...

As my Dad use to say "They would tax the air you breath if they could." It may come to that one day.

If you drive a car, car, I'll tax the street
If you try to sit, sit, I'll tax your seat
If you get too cold, cold, I'll tax the heat
If you take a walk, walk, I'll tax your feet

THe Fact is - there are Billions of Dollars of Matching Money for Highway repair and construction from the Federal Government - that the states must match in some ways in order to receive. So - when that program began Decades ago(Goes back to Eisenhauer) - Gas taxes were levied to provide those needed Matching Funds. That was at a time when a car was lucky to get 12 MPG (AS well as no Pandemic) Over the Years - as people DROVE MORE the tax was not needed to be increased - and then came EPA mileage standards where cars began to get better and better gas mileage - and NOW we have EV's that do not use gas at all. And each time people use less gas - in order to Qualify for the Matching Funds - States needed to raise more funds - so the gas tax gets adjusted. (THis is NOT ONLY in New Jersey - PA raised their tax last year too) Interestingly - even with the increase - NJ still has among the lowest gas taxes in the Nation (Because of Philly and NYC traffic). WHile some states have put in Rail alternatives - the reality is - while rail travel has increased - it has not been as fast as car travel here as well.

And YES - you CAN expect an EV charge (WHy should EV drivers not pay toward the Highway Funds). This is OLD NEWS - too bad it cannot be accurately reported. NJ is not raising Taxes because of the Pandemic - this increase was established LAST YEAR. But really - it has been in place since the 1950's.

PUGPROUD: In Maryland, we had a rain tax under a (D) Governor. Current (R) Governor did away with that tax.

Governor Murphy claims the 9 cent raise is to make up for lost revenues during COVID as people drove less, using less gas, and raising less taxes from the old gas tax rate. I guarantee, when all this is over, it will not get lowered back down. All due to power hungry politicians and tyranny.

Political discussion aside...New Jersey's gas taxes have always been much lower than all the surrounding states (as a holdover from New Jerseys' days as the cradle of the American Petroleum industry - Standard Oil / Exxon was founded here and the state has always had very pro-petroleum laws on the books - witness the law that all gas stations need to provide attendants to pump fuel - self service is illegal in NJ).

NJ just used this as an opening for moving up their taxes to parity with surrounding states. Sure its higher taxes, but its also correcting an inequity.

It is crazy to me the USA has $14,000 of property tax on a home near a major city, but zero in consumption taxes. Taxes should be shifted from your house to gas, booze, bullets, pot, cigarettes, beer and gas. If you don't consume some of these items, you don't pay the tax. Good for you and good for the everyone else too.

Stop trying to preach your socialistic bullshit to our American cousins who enjoy “REAL FREEDOMS” protected by their Constitution unlike our fluid, ever changing BS laws that are so often amended by our bleeding heart lefty liberal asshole Supreme Court Judges.

Canucks and Yanks are taxed enough and it is Governments with spending problems -not taxation deficits

@QEW - The USA will soon be $30T in debt. And still spending $750B a year on defence in a $2T budget with $1T - $2T in deficit spending. Something has to change. And not they are not taxes properly as per my example. Enjoy your healthcare which I am sure you will appreciate when the time comes... :)
