REVIEW: 2020 Lexus GX460. A BETTER Choice For MOST Than A Land Cruiser Or LX? And Next To NO Trade-Off?
In the luxury SUV market, the players are usually modern, car-based rather than an off-road champion.

Lexus marches to the beat of a different drummer with the old school GX460 sporting full-time four-wheel drive and a V8 engine.

The GX is very capable off road. The rear air suspension and Kinetic dynamic suspension allow you to venture far off the beaten path without any worry.

It’s an old school TRUE SUV. Reliable, Boring, Tough and a BETTER value than a Land Cruiser or Lexus LX.

Do you agree?

1996 called and wants its design back.

Seriously. Such an antiquated machine. Every time I see one with a new-car tag, I SMH.

The current Prado--which this pig is--dates back to 2009. That Prado was a mild restyle of the 2002 Prado. That Prado was heavily based on the 1996 and was not a clean sheet redesign, but more of a significant revision level of renewal.

My wife once wanted a GX, so I demonstrated how it would behave in an emergency move. Of course the old tractor jacked its real axle and careened. We went down the street and got a Mercedes GL. The Lexus GX is a pile of shit.

A "dressed up" 4Runner, they drive like crap but are reliable gas guzzlers with ancient technology but some people love them and after all these years they sell well.

The Land Cruiser Prado which the GX460 really is, has a much cleaner design and some diesel engine options as well. It is a nice upgrade from a 4Runner if you can swing it. The Lexus version is a bit much these days with the family grill and bodywork that would get in the way offroad.

Have the previous gen GX in our garage as the wife daily drives it. The tech is outdated and it isn’t exactly fuel efficient but... it’s solid as a rock. I think that is what I like about it the most. It’s relatively simple and it just works. Outdated isn’t always a bad thing as long as it serves a purpose. If they would make some tech updates and get away from the ridiculous grill that Lexus has adopted across the lineup, i’d consider buying again. A transmission update with the current engine would do it wonders.

The GX has a better value proposition. The LX is just bigger and more expensive than the GX.

The Mercedes ML / GLE outsells the GX460 2:1 however the price for a used 2010 GX460 is 2X the one for the ML / GLE same year. The GX has a lower cost-to-own.

Get the GX if you want something solid, reliable that will hold its value over a decade or longer.
Get the ML / GLE if you want something more comfortable to drive.

Yeah..notice how Mercedes marketing has totally and completely abandoned their prior advertising strategy of promoting how durable and long-lasting their cars/trucks are?

Recall this tear-inducing ad from 10 years ago....Mercedes 'Faithful Commercial'...no more testimonials from Wolfgang Wostendieck and Luzstella and George Koschel for Mercedes in 2020!

Watch it...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVkM84mElWg

So sad that the Mercedes (and BMW for that matter) legacies have been squandered and kicked to the curb over the last 10-15 years. Brand loyalty is no more.
