Mercedes To Shift C63 AMG From A Brawny V8 To An Electrified Four Cylinder?

Mercedes-Benz is working on a new generation of its C-Class, and a prototype for the car's high-performance Mercedes-AMG C63 variant has been spotted for the first time.

Our previous spy shots showed prototypes for the regular C-Class and Mercedes-AMG C43-replacing C53.

The new C-Class is due out in 2021, likely as a 2022 model. While AMG should have the C53 ready at launch, the C63's launch is expected to be staggered by about 6-12 months. Part of the reason for the delay is due to the radical shift in powertrain technology expected for the new C63.

R.I.P V8 you will most certainly be missed, all these rev limiters and electrifying of engines has taken a toll on one of my favorite parts of the performance car experience...the sound

Piping in artificial sounds and muting exhaust notes makes me feel as if I’m only going to purchase CPO/used V8 performance cars of the past moving forward...the modern day rules/regulations for these cars leaves an auto enthusiast feeling like they are missing something

Forget all the high tech and give me back my V8 and that thunderous sound

Well said. Nothing beats the torque and sound of a V8 especially with a manual
transmission. If V8's resale values decline over time its a win for buyers who love them like me. If the V8's resale values go up over time its a win for owners like me. Until and unless they are outlawed V8's will always have a strong following.

With camo on, its shape resembles a 1990s Cadillac Catera.

190E performance versions were I4s, so why not? That's where it all started and comes full circle. I love the V8 C63s, but just hate automatics in my high performance compacts.

I only do autos or shift paddles in hyper/super cars (which I hardly care for), ultra luxury (M760i), and Raptors.

Everything else, is 100% manual in my large vehicle collection (only 1 vehicle above $100k), as I'm not that loaded.

Just out of curiosity but what other cars are in your collection?

Generally I wouldn't list them, but...:

2011 M3 Competition Sedan 6MT (second owner, TX), 2018 M4 6MT (leased, in Grosse P, MI), 2020 GT350 6MT (as Ford HQ employee-GP,MI), 2019 Raptor 802A (MI-Ford employee), 2010 SVT Raptor 6.2 SCab build (TX-2nd owner), 2014 SVT Raptor SCrew SE (TX-2nd owner), 1996 Hilux Double Cab 5MT (Nigeria), 2008 Defender 90 SVX 6MT (UK, family gift), 2016 F-Type V6 S 6MT (UK, ex-JLR employee), 2014 Evoque Coupe SD4 6MT (UK JLR employee), 2020 Tacoma TRD Pro 6MT (NM), 2018 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 6MT (Nigeria), 1974 Bronco 3MT (shared with fiance; Max Lider), 2019 M760i xDrive (leased, MI), and several motorcycles.

I'm not exactly self-made, as my work as an automotive engineer didn't pay for much of that. Only a very few vehicles of mine are automatic, as only the best automatics or DCTs are worth the trouble.

When it came to a compact RWD sports sedan or coupe to replace my old 2008 G35S 6MT, I automatically rejected the C63S AMG and went with my first BMW (F80 M3 6MT). My mother is a BMW aficionado and etc, so it was only a matter of time. I loved NA 6.2L V8 W204 AMG version more so than the W205 FI V8, but W205 cockpit is much better.

I avoid autos, except for the rarest of circumstances (M760i, Raptors)

What's the condition of the old Bronco?

The '74 Bronco is actually a Max Lider restoration if I recall, as my partner and I bought it together.

I had wanted a 1994-95 Defender 90, but with him working on the 2021 U725 team in Dearborn, it made more than enough sense to get a old Bronco and make do with the '08 Defender I left behind in England.

It's shared between us, not solely owned by me and alternates between Michigan and TX/NM.

I never cared for the 1978-96 Broncos and loved the Icon examples of 1966-77s, but not at over $100k. Max Lider was more reasonably priced at least.

Both of us have reserved a 2021 First Edition 4dr 2.7L 10AT (his) and a 2021 Badlands 2dr 2.3L 7MT (mine), which are said to include A Plan thankfully.

Hope you've reserved one, as Q1 2022 is the earliest anyone else can buy one on the lot.

Very interesting collection and nice to see so much Murican Muscle in your camp. Thanks for sharing and I envy you as I always wanted to embark upon a career in automotive engineering but I didn’t have the 96% GPA to get into Western University as I partied too much in high school...

Wanting a V8 is basically holding on to nostalgia at this point (don't get me wrong, i do enjoy the nice bass of a V8). Hypercars have already showed what you can do when you focus on engineering and take the best pieces of ICE and EV technology. It makes sense we're going to start seeing those performance gains move down, first to the accessible performance segment and then to the mainstream segments.

And all of these smaller electified/turbo’d 4’s will require expensive maintenance and repairs down the road just past OEM warranty far surpassing any negligible gas savings over V8’s. Give me a naturally aspirated V8 any day as they will outlast and be much cheaper longer term than this new fanged “good on paper only” ricer tech.
