Tesla Vehicle Safety Report for the third quarter of 2020 once again does not bring any breakthroughs. The number of accidents per million miles driven are similar to previous periods.

Moreover, the numbers for driving without Autopilot are actually slightly worse than a year ago.

Um, What? Look at the graph again, it is millions of miles driven per accident. A higher number is better.

There were FEWER autopilot accidents than any previous quarter and also fewer accidents without AP (likely due to better weather).

It's also worth noting that the very beta City Street Autopilot was in wide release in Q3. There have been theories that the AP safety has been inflated because most of the AP driving is on the Highway, where there are naturally fewer accidents. It is nice to see that accidents did not balloon even though people are now using it heavily on city streets.

The next step is a FSD wide release end of this year or Q1, and after that FSD will be pretty close to feature complete and the focus will be improving safety even faster versus adding the missing functionality, which I'm assuming is what most of the team is focused on now.
