RANGE ANXIETY GOES OFF-ROAD! First Review Of The Truck That Has Virtually NO Chance Of Beating The Telsa CyberTruck. What's YOUR Bet On It?
Some key quotes from the review of the Rivian R1T pickup.. "I've never driven an off-road vehicle with regenerative braking and it's really tough to get used to. My pre-production truck has enough regen programmed in that I can do one-pedal driving most of the time, and over the course of a week, I can count on one hand the number of times I actually dig into the mechanical brakes. Like other EVs with strong regen, lifting off the throttle will slow the Rivian to a complete stop, and this really helps to quickly scrub off speed when approaching whoops or rocks out on the trails.

My truck has the 135-kWh battery, but that 300-mile range isn't even a question out here in the desert. In these very specific conditions with a not-quite-done truck, I'm averaging roughly 167 miles per charge."

Here's the question that the reviewer doesn't ask because she's too busy gushing over the words 'game-changer'.

But it IS the question she SHOULD have asked...

WHO ON EARTH WANTS TO BE OFF-ROAD IN THE WILDERNESS IN A TRUCK WITH ONLY 167 MILES OF RANGE?

Will they be installing chargers inside the boulders in the Grand Canyon?

Will they need to pull a trailer of MOPHIE-like batter packs in a trail BEHIND them to be safe?

Talk about the ULTIMATE range anxiety!

Also, tell us what you think their chances are long term against Tesla.

Chime in spies...

Screw the limited range, people will flock to the pop out dog shelf.

It's a great looking truck. It's electric. That'll be enough. Seems like they've been talking about this truck for years though.

Just strap on a couple of jerry cans full of electrons.

The new rescue method will require a big generator.

There are many people who would not get caught dead in a Tesla CyberTruck because of the style preferring a traditional look versus look at me, in your face.

I've done almost no off-roading, but I don't think the majority travel a significant distance off-road. I would guess 30-40 miles is a long day when you're working your way through trails. 167 miles of range sounds like a good day in, spend some time wandering about the second day, then drive out the third, and then head to a charging station. That would likely be the more critical piece, how far away is the nearest station from your off-road play site?

Also consider load. It would be impossible to calculate a reliable off-road range. If you're climbing that will increase current draw, etc.

"When the R1T enters production in June 2021, Rivian will have three battery sizes. The largest 180-kilowatt-hour battery will provide a range of around 400 miles while the smaller 135-kWh battery should be good for about 300. There will be an even smaller base option, which I'm told will offer around 240 miles" Sounds good to me! Besides, the grotesc looking of the Cybertruck ia a turn off to a Lot of people, me included.

You're clearly NOT a pickup person.

Bed looks pretty useless from the pics i’ve seen. Their SUV might be the way to go. Would fit my wife’s driving needs perfectly. Just don’t see how any BEV would be fun/reliable off road. You’d be more concerned about battery than the trail. I can burn half a tank of fuel (if not more) in my rubicon on a 30-40 mile trail day.

Torque is key for off-road and it takes a ton of energy to produce it. Fire roads or well maintained trails... this truck would be okay. Like it was mentioned earlier, how far is the trailhead from the nearest charging station? Where I live in CO, you don’t see many of them unless you are in Denver/Springs and even then you have to search for one that works. Hills, pulling, gear, heat/ac, lights, etc... all things that will draw more battery. Plug in hybrid like the new wrangler 4xE looks promising. 30-40 miles battery then back to gas. Would be enough for a lot of daily commutes but gas when you really need range.

Looks alone will kill a lot of sales of the CyberTruck. It's a little too 1980's sci-fi for a lot of people I've spoken to. Not everybody wants that kind of attention. I'm sure Lambo guys will love it. As far as off road range, those numbers are quite variable. I guarantee you I'm not getting 400 miles range in my diesel Rubicon when I'm off road. 200? Maybe. As I said, there's a huge difference between a farm lane and rock crawling. In the event that you didn't pay attention to your charge, you could resort to the eJerry cans or even a portable solar panels. It'd take a while but you could generate something if needed.
