Preparing For The Big Bug Out? Pandemic Forced An Epic Shift In Pickup Truck Sales

Attitudes of pickup truck owners have shifted in a big way with COVID-19, based on a new study from CarGurus.com.

"We learned how the pandemic may have helped to spur pickup truck purchases," said Madison Gross, director of customer insights at the automotive research and shopping site.

Part of the reason is the time to do more home improvement projects and the need for a vehicle to haul bulky stuff. If people were pondering a truck, they pulled the trigger.

Someone educate me: Why would you pay more for transportation then you have to? If I did not need a truck, I would not buy a truck. I would buy the most economical car that I could get a way with. I use my truck for business. I am looking past the day when I am not in business. I see a Toyota Corolla (or equivalent) or EV if the price by then is comparable to a Toyota Corolla type vehicle. OK, time for you to lecture me; pro or con.

The increase in pickup purchases is psychological to a point. A pickup is strong and a lot of people feel castrated by COVID so the pickup is a replacement for vestigial balls.

I'm with you on buying what you need. I wouldn't own an Escalade were it not for my wife and I being so successful and pregnancies. LOL

lots of reasons. I tow, bike, atv, ski, fish, hunt, etc... I also live in snow country so a high clearance 4x4 is pretty nice when the weather doesn’t cooperate. I would love a more efficient and economic option but at the end of the day, that hasn’t been brought to market. I do limit my miles in my truck as much as possible and take my jeep when I can. Different lifestyles require different tools. When I lived in Long Beach (early 2000s) after college, my old jeep was fine. Maybe put 3000 miles a year in it as I walked and biked almost everywhere. Now I live where everything requires a drive and i’m usually hauling something with me. The second a viable EV product is available, i will gladly consider. Just don’t trust batteries in sub freezing temps going up the continental divide. Sounds like a long cold night if you happen to hit a bit of traffic.

I'll soon be switching from an XT6--which I like--to a K5 that I'm excited to get for a while. My jaunts to Newport Beach and to Tucumcari were actually best in the string of Fusions I had. I'm sure the K5 is do much better on MPG than the XT6. I much prefer sedans to crossovers.
