California Voters REJECT Gig Economy - Uber And Lyft Drivers Are Contractors NOT Employees

Gig economy giants including Uber Technologies Inc., Lyft Inc. and DoorDash Inc. have won their effort to pass a hotly contested ballot measure that will exempt the companies from a state law requiring them to classify most of their workers as employees.

Uber and Lyft soared Wednesday after California voters, in the most expensive ballot initiative in state history, approved a ballot measure exempting gig-economy companies from the state labor law known as A.B. 5. Almost 58 percent of voters were supporting the proposition versus 42 percent against, with more than 80% of the vote reported, according to the California Secretary of State’s Office.

The title should state the California voters endorsed the gig economy. Rejecting the gig economy would mean all drivers are employees.

It's just people being selfish. They value the availability of the lift service more than the working conditions of the staff who work their. I've never taken a ride in these kinds of lift services and never would.

80% of the drivers want to be contractors for flexibility. Otherwise, they have a good chance of losing their jobs, would not be able to drive as a side-gig, and oh yeah... costs will rise dramatically for all users and drivers will not see those dollars at all.

Its true costs would go up but drivers as employees would benefit from workman's comp, health care benefits, severance pay, etc. I highly doubt 80% want to be contractors.

They wouldn't appreciate the Grey Poupon on the seats anyway.

The only reason they allow the gig workers is because no one in their right mind takes a cab. The cabs in this state are filthy with puke staine carpets and their drivers are surly ex-cons. Anyone with half a brain takes Uber or Lyft.
