CheckMate: BMW's iX3 Steps Up And Puts The Tesla Model Y In It's Place

BMW’s trailblazing i3 and i8 set out a pretty bold and exciting statement for what the German manufacturer's electrified future was going to look like. With their sci-fi looks and space-age tech, they offered a solid vision on what the cars of tomorrow were going to be like.

What we have here, the all-new BMW iX3, perhaps isn’t the third installment of BMW’s i line-up that we were expecting. It all looks a little bit, well, familiar. But that is exactly BMW’s intention; to all intents and purposes, this is simply an X3 that also happens to be electric.

Except for the fact that it is much, much slower, only has 1 motor, has less range, and not a hope for full self driving in the future.

Oh yeah, it has a lower top speed and is $20k more expensive as well ($12.5k after factoring in incentives)

It's an ICE conversion, a stop-gap at best. And it is late.

Yep, and ICE conversions will never be nearly as efficient as a ground-up EV.

Too little too late...

The only real competitor to the Model Y at this point is the Ford Mach E (provided they meet their range targets). This BMW will most likely cost more than the Model Y/Mach E, is slower and will probably have a 210-220 mile range according to US standards.

And even then the Y and the Mach E won't truly compete. The Mach E has a significant number of Mustang owners and fans that are among its early adopters.

It wouldn't surprise me if a portion of the Mach E's buyers wouldn't be caught dead in a Y and vice versa.

Well, the bumper probably won't fall off.

No single car or brand will crush Tesla. Instead it's death by 1,000 cuts as every single brand starts making EVs.

Just like the dozens of companies selling Android phones have decimated Apple and their margins... oh wait

The fact that it's an X3 with batteries bolted in makes it DOA.

Have you guys owned an EV before? I drive a low range one that isn't Tesla and I have no issues using it with the real world range I need. I don't crave the speed of a Tesla nor need the range. I have an ICE sports car for fun. To each their own for what they want to buy. Tesla is bleeding edge but for a commuter I only need to cover up to 70 miles at most per day.

It's more marketing for non-EV drivers than anything else. I rarely use over 80 miles a day and I drive a ton.
