Elon Musk Says Additional Wait For 250MPH Roadster Will Be Worth It

Elon Musk teased that the long wait for Tesla’s next-gen Roadster “will be worth it.” The CEO’s update came as a response to tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee’s tweet about the vehicle, which has seen delays in its deliveries.

Musk and Design Chief Franz von Holzhausen remain tight-lipped about the new Roadster’s improvements, but there is no doubt that it will be astonishing. Since the next-gen Roadster’s unveiling, there have been staggering improvements in Tesla’s other vehicles and the company’s technology, especially in the battery development front.

The Roadster prototype was able to hit a 0-60 of 1.9 seconds with a MODEL S 100 KWH BATTERY. A structural pack with 200 KWh should weigh exactly the same as that battery, but improve rigidity and max power output significantly. I wouldn't be surprised to see 1.7 or 1.8 seconds for the car with completely insane 0-100 mph and 0-200 mph numbers. I was hoping to hear more about the SpaceX package, but I don't think that will happen until 2023 or later.

Tesla is aiming all wrong. They should target the mainstream, muscle-car segment with the Tesla Tsunami or some other sort of name and make it a car that will be VERY mainstream attainable and very much a performance bargain.

Tesla needs volume if they are going to continue their unsustainable 50% growth per year forever trajectory. They can't afford a vapor car bauble that sells in the dozens.

This is a halo car that is basically marketing. I doubt it will even be profitable, but it's main purpose is to show that an EV can be better at everything than an ICE car.

I would love to see a two seat convertible based on the Model 3 Performance powertrain (heck, I would buy that today actually), but cars like that just won't sell very well and won't be very practical for Tesla's long term vision of autonomous ridesharing.

Elon can't afford a halo car if his goal is to grow by 50% every year for a decade. He needs broad, mainstream hits in segments he's not in now on a regular basis to meet that goal.

By “EV can be better at everything than an Ice car”. By everything you mean everything but efficient road trips (always searching and going out of the way for charging) and towing anything over 50-100 miles?

SJD says....

"This is a halo car that is basically marketing. I doubt it will even be profitable"

MRE30 says..."I doubt any vehicle product lines that Tesla has marketed during its lifespan as an auto manufacturer were profitable on a stand-alone basis."

This roadster joins the club of unprofitable Tesla vehicles.

@trmckin, the Roadster will very well have over 700 miles of range--you wouldn't be stopping very often, much less than any other car with that level of performance.

The supercharger map has gotten to be a bit ridiculous, it's turning into Starbucks. They have stations every 50 miles or less throughout the US, but in major cities the stations are going up everywhere. I have (had pre-covid) a 30 mile commute and there are now 11 (wtf) superchargers on the way. They're always empty... I wonder if they should stop building then in Silicon Valley and focus more on LA where I have heard some get filled up.

@mre30 ... I think the Chinese Model 3 is profitable on a standalone basis, maybe the US Model 3 now as well. Over their lifetime the 3 and Y should be the most profitable. S & X are more novelty as well like the Roadster.
