Failure Rate On Older Tesla Touchscreens Reaches 30% With Over 10,000 Vehicles Affected So Far

An update to the NHTSA investigation into Tesla’s MCU car touchscreen failure showed that some build months had a failure rate over 30% and Tesla has received over 10,000 requests from owners to change their MCU.

NHTSA is still considering a recall even after Tesla pushed its own fix

Owners of older Tesla Model S and Model X vehicles have been reporting some issues with their MCUs.

You don't say. And what do you think is going to happen to these same screens from GM or VAG or Fiat etc. People think you are backward if you prefer gauges and buttons and knobs, but they will always work.... :p. This sort of repair will total out an older car at some point.

In this case they wear out the memory modules (too many read/writes).. simply make that a serviceable part and be done with it.

Yes...kind of crazy that all these recent vehicles will be bricked like an old iPhone 5s because the screens can no longer be replaced and the operating systems cease to function.

None of them were bricked, I was one of the 30%. The car still functions without the screen, but you lose the radio, map, etc.

This is due to a manufacturing/design defect. The car is constantly logging data onto memory chips that don't have sufficient read/write cycles to support that. This is not a one off screen failing...they will all eventually fail.
