IF GM Kills The Camaro, Would That Be A SMART or STUPID Move?
If you're a fan of General Motors' high-performance vehicles, we've got some bad news for you, friends. That's because as of this week, rumors started swirling.

Apparently, the Chevrolet Camaro is going to be hitting the bricks.

After the current-gen Camaro wraps up its life cycle in 2012, it will not see a replacement. According to reports, the development of its successor has been halted.

As of now it's not official but given the change of product portfolios and the mix of vehicles — skewing towards sport-utility vehicles — it seems like this isn't completely off base. It also doesn't help that the Camaro came in third place, relative to the Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger, for 2018 sales.

It also didn't help that GM botched the refresh of the Camaro and its facade looks awful.

All that said, we've got to ask: IF GM kills the Camaro, would that be a SMART or STUPID move by management?

What say you, Spies?

...The sports car is midway through its life cycle and won’t be replaced when it ends in 2023, according to musclecarsandtrucks.com.

Company sources tell the website that development on its successor has been suspended and that the model name will go on hiatus then, as it did from 2003 to 2009.

A GM spokesman released a statement to Motor1.com that said it wouldn’t "engage in speculation..."

Completely stupid. What would be left? Nothing.

The Camaro has the potential to do a couple things 1) Replace the front engined Corvette at the dealer as a reasonably priced high performance car. 2) Become part of a larger family including a 4 door coupe model to boost flagging sedan sales. I say to Chevrolet, bad move to kill the Camaro.

In a way it makes sense, particularly when C8 is debuting

You might say they are very different cars, but thing is, GM has given Camaro too much performance that it infringes on Corvette's territory, so that should be restrained

Just the opposite strategy makes sense. Blow out the Camaro's performance even more for the front engine crowd (C1-C7 diehards, Camaro followers and others) and take C8 as far as it can go performance wise for C1-C7 converts and new buyers drawn to new platform. The problem big companies have is competing against itself for customers. In this case the significantly different platforms should actually expand GM's total customer base. What's likely behind a move to kill the Camaro is a tight money situation at GM and the accountants are getting their way. It takes balls to over ride the tight fisted accountants and we all know there are none at the very top of GM.

Agree completely. GM misses the target on this generation and will refer to SUV trend.
However, the ancient Challenger is doing great as is the Mustang which will be replaced by another generation. No matter how GM spins it they finished 3rd in a 3 car race.

Yes GM is a mess, but I'd rather they spent whatever money left on adding a Cayman competitor(hopefully they planned a scalable platform) at Camaro price, than on something with useless backseat

If you want to do a sports car, do it right

That goes with what I've said for some time i.e. that Corvette should be GM's Porsche brand.

Manta Ray / $40K Cayman
Stingray / $55K F/R
Zora / $75K
Mako / $40K Macan
Muto / $60K Cayenne (who doesn't love a Godzilla reference)

As for something like the Taycan/Panamera, I'd let that fall to a Cadillac Escala.
You would then do a LWB versions of the Mako and Muto and bias them 100% toward luxury and replace the XT5/6 with named Cadillacs.

1 - They are not Cancelling the Camaro - only delaying it. I would assume this has to do with converting over to still another Platform at the Factory along with the intro of the CT5 and CT4 which are built on that platform. Do not want to split up introduction on low volumes - like they did on the New Pick Ups - which are just starting to come online now.

2 - This is a Financial decision. If Camaro makes money - keep it -if it doesn't - let it go. AS e have seen - sales of vehicles that do not look like Four WHeel Drives simply are tanking - even little sports cars.GMcannot afford to subsidize an ICE car right now with all the subsidies that they will need for the upcoming EVs that GM will NOT qualify for the Tax Incentive while others still will. So - they will have to eat part of it probably.

AND so will that other Electric Vehicle maker as well.

They’ve killed it once then brought it back and Dodge n Ford have no plans to kill their ponies. GM is simply a mess and the communications team should already be gone. How many mixed messages have been sent in the last decade of New GM? There IS a market GM simply won’t give customers what THEY want. I like the Camaro but it’s tight inside, hard to see out of and the others offer perhaps better packaging advantages. I’ve already read the new platform for a next gen is 2 years after this one is slated to go away but that’s piss poor planning by the morons running GM who are obsessed w EVs because the Chinese govt is forcing that direction not free market forces.

I’ve never understood why companies simply discard platforms... I wish they’d take the outgoing CTS and make a 2 door Cadillac Coupe and Convertible out of it, it’s a great size and development costs would be minimal. They’d have a nice luxury coupe with room for the boomers who don’t want a 4 door or SUV. Oh and the ATS Coupe was to small...

Stupid move because it would be saying that they cannot style and promote a vehicle that should be easy sales all day.

It's the styling and promotion of the Camaro that has caused poor sales, not the engineering.

But let's imagine that in 3-4 years GM will have no RWD platforms to use for the Camaro, you would ink a deal with a platform partner.

Mary Barra is an idiot and the gender token needs to get kicked to the curb along with everyone in GM's styling studios.

Camaro should just RIP... Its ugly.. Cramped and underpowered..!

Is it possible with the new CT4 being lower priced than the outgoing ATS that it would overlap with the Camaro?

Two totally different markets despite likely similar pricing.

CT4/Camaro/Chevelle/Riviera (convertible) would be a brilliant use of the Alpha platform.

Why not just lower production of Camero based on demand? Why kill it and give more market share to rivals Mustang and Challenger? That's stupid.
