DRIVEN: The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class Suits Up To Take DOWN The All-new BMW X7
In the world of full-size, luxury sport-utility vehicles, the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class is one of the go-to choices. And, come to think of it, until recently there wasn't much competition.

There's always been the Ford Expedition, Lincoln Navigator and Cadillac Escalade. But now with the all-new Navigator actually being competitive and all-new BMW X7 getting a ton of attention, the GLS has its work cut out for itself.

These are some great products and the three-pointed star needs to bring the heat.

So, how did it do?

Our friends at Auto Express posted its review this week and if the verdict is to be believed, the GLS is a helluva pick. Whether or not it's the one to have over its competition is yet to be determined but it seems like it's worth checking out.

Verdict

The Mercedes GLS takes a huge leap over its predecessor. It has superb comfort and refinement, while offering more space than nearly anything else for the money. We think E-Active Body Control will be worth the wait: the ride quality is sublime. We can nitpick that the dash looks too much like the cheaper GLE’s and that the car might be a bit big for urban UK roads, but otherwise the GLS is a hit.

The Mercedes IS probably the better driving vehicle because BMW has completely lost the Ultimate Driving Machine script, but the GLS is as full looking as a MY2000 Camry and looks as old. The BMW will be the one to buy to be seen in.

Lies, pictures don’t do the GLS justice, saw it side by side with the X7 in person, the GLS makes the X7 look like the bloated X5 it is and exposes the desperate water buffalo snout grille move of Bimmer even more, while the GLS looks cohesive, the X7 appears to have stopped midway during surgery

It's yawn inducing.

Better than vomit inducing, I just see a huge wad of snot flinging out of that Bimmer buffalo-like snout

Be that as it may, BMW dealers are watching the X7 fly off the lots and it is pummeling the GLS for sales. Will new one that looks like the old one change that? #doubtful

@MD-To your point, the Jones's will want the X7. The people with real wealth or those who can't handle the X7 grill will buy this. Those who simply want to be below the radar and ignored will get a Yukon Denali or a Landcruiser.

I saw the GLS reveal at the NYC Auto Show two months ago and it is plain-jane looking.

Maybe Mercedes designed it to be bland on purpose so that the true 'richies' pay the extra $50,000 and just get the Maybach version when it comes out?

The X7 is the offical SUV of the Hamptons this summer.

The vast majority of people who buy these do not have "real wealth"...most are upper middle class families who use them as a family haulers. The GLS (in the US) is basically the same price as the X7, so they will be heavily cross shopped. The GLS may have an advantage in that it is slightly larger which will translate to a larger 3rd row and cargo area. The GLS has the e body control which is cool...but at $6500 will have few takers. The X7 and GLS are both strong efforts. A lot of the sales breakdown will come down to incentives/lease prices.

And how much money does a person have to earn to qualify as "real" wealth?

Every single review I’ve viewed or read on the GLS has been overwhelmingly good. It would easily be my choice against the X7.
