Sizing Up The Competition? GM Caught Benchmarking Model X And I-Pace
Since the launch of the Chevy Bolt EV, things have been relatively quiet for General Motors on the electric vehicle front in the United States. But earlier this year, GM announced that Cadillac would become the automaker's leading brand when it comes to electrification. As proof of this, Cadillac teased an electric SUV that will arrive in showrooms early next decade.

Over the past decade, Chevrolet has been a major name in the plug-in space with hit vehicles like the Chevy Volt and Bolt EV. However, this success has not translated to other General Motors brands. Previous plug-in offerings from Cadillac like the ELR and CT6 did not really catch on with consumers.

They would be wide to size up the Tesla X, as it's the only electric SUV in existence of any real significance. Not to mention, it's excellent and beautiful.

Excellent for sure, beautiful...hmmm not so much to me at least. The S is a good looking large sedan, the 3 with the exception of the turned up nose is good looking, the X's proportions seem off to me. They would have done better sacrificing a tiny bit of aerodynamics and not sloped the rear as much as they did.

You forget the Audi which is outselling the S and X combined in Europe and the X in the US.
Plus it is a better vehicle than the X.

Quality and reliability are Tesla's two biggest deficits.

Quality is pretty good, but was very inconsistent on the ramp for the 3. Any car you pick up today should be in line with other manufacturers. Reliability as in not being stranded on the side of the road is already extremely good.

The ELR failed to catch on because is was $30K too expensive. Had they done it instead of the Volt and priced it like a Volt, Cadillac would have been an EV pioneer sort of kinda maybe.

The ELR was underpowered and never updated as the Volt was. Plus, it was expensive!

THis is not news
Manufacturers have been taking apart and evaluating competition for more than a Century - it is as common as can be. The idea that they were "caught" doing it is sort of like finding out that time passes - as If you didn't already know

Up to this point - there has not been a really competitive market for EVs at many levels and sizes. But as the Tax Incentives wind up for them - That EV company will be bombarded by new models from LOTS of manufacturers - who still have their series of Tax incentives in place. Will customers pay and Extra $7500 for them - I don't see it. GM has the same problem too.

WE still have no real knowledge of the actual size of the EV market that would happen without Incentives or laws requiring them - but eventually that will have to go away too. And the early sellers in the market will be stuck with first generation product - and will need to spend again to update them.

Promising a BEV luxury SUV in 2030 or so isn't exactly comforting. Cadillac may not be around at that time to bring it to market.

Calillac is FLAILING.

The Bolt should be leveraged for an affordable Cadillac crossover rather than giving said product to Chevrolet. As rapidly as possible, Cadillac needs to have an EV hit. Making it a bottom-of-the-line product that lures new blood to the brand is essential. GIVE IT A DAMNED NAME. "Ohm by Cadillac...comfort without range anxiety."
