Tesla's Model 3 Becomes The European Benchmark For Safety

The Tesla Model 3 has been deemed as one of the safest vehicles in the road today after undergoing a series of stringent tests by the European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP), an independent body that evaluates the safety of vehicles in Europe. With its stellar scores, the Tesla Model 3 has proven itself to be one of the safest cars ever tested by the agency, especially since Euro NCAP made its safety tests tougher in 2018.  

The Tesla Model 3 was granted a perfect 5-Star rating by the Euro NCAP in all four of its safety tests’ categories: Adult Occupant Protection, which tests how the vehicle protects its driver and passenger; Child Occupant Protection, which gauges the protection of younger occupants; Vulnerable Road Users, which tests a vehicle’s safety features for cyclists and pedestrians; and Safety Assist, which evaluates a car’s active safety capabilities.

Not unless they make the headlights better. Go to their site and see for yourself what they actually test, it is not as extensive as what the National Highway Safety Administration tests as it relates to crash worthiness. Oh and by the way they may not have made it a + pick but they do rate it superior (https://www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicle/tesla/model-3-4-door-sedan/2018)

Also the Euro NCAP is more extensive than either of the Safety Pick + or the NHTSA in scope of what they consider.

Sorry to burst everyone's bubbles but EURO NCAP basically says that the "Model 3 is a safe small car". It DOES NOT say that the Model 3 is the safest of all cars.

If you are in an accident in your Model 3 and another similar-sized car, like a Honda Civic/Accord or a Camry you might fare better than the people in the Camry. If, however, you hit a tree, a wall, or a vehicle bigger than your Model 3, the laws of physics will prevail and you will likely be severely injured or die.

If everyone in your neighborhood drives Escalades and Explorers and F-150's and you get in a bad accident with one of them you will also likely be severely injured or even die. If you are using Tesla's autopilot and it steers you into a wall or a white semi-tractor trailer because the software thought it was "sky" you will definitely die. Oh, then it will go up in a fireball if the batteries get breached.

Just wanted to level everyone's understanding of what the Model 3's NCAP results really mean in the Real World. I hope you never get in an accident but if you do, I hope it is a same size or smaller vehicle than your Model 3.

Between all these tests into stationary walls, offset crashes etc... The 3 does an excellent job of protecting the passengers. Nobody is saying the laws of physics are being defied here, if you are in an F150 and get into an accident with a Semi, well same story as you point out above. However I doubt we are all going to drive Semis for that reason. Good point though, nobody to date is defying the laws of physics.

Crash avoidance can go a long way to prevent a crash with a bigger car in that case.

And isn't there still an inherent problem of batteries catching on fire or is that just something we have to accept if we are going to own an EV.
