Another Pony Car Death Blow- Chevrolet Cancels Z28 Program

Another Pony Car Death Blow- Chevrolet Cancels Z28 Program

A new report from Muscle Cars And Trucks, citing unnamed sources, says General Motors has canceled development of the sixth-generation Chevy Camaro Z/28. The news comes after last week’s revelation the automaker is rumored to discontinue the Camaro after 2023 with the seventh-generation Camaro program shelved for now.

Deliveries for the sixth-generation Camaro have been abysmal, falling steadily since its 2016 introduction. Last year, just under 51,000 found homes. Sales figures for 2019 aren’t looking much better. However, sales for its crosstown competitor, the Ford Mustang, are also down, though nowhere near as extreme as Camaro sales. GM’s hesitation with another costly development program makes sense.

Instead of remodeling the well known deficiencies of the Camaro, GM is throwing in the towel on the car.
This demonstrates a serious LACK OF LEADERSHIP and competitive ability of GM. Very, very, very disappointing.

This can all be fixed with styling.

The sales drop of the Mustang can be attributed to ineffective styling and the loss of the V6 base model. Bring the V6 base back and watch sales climb. Make it look like a Mustang and watch the sales climb.

Has anyone at GM ever had a new idea? Or are we waiting here for the new and updated Vega?

Other new Z/28 was certainly an awesome car but it never really reflected the ethos of the original. They should have put a modern turbo V6 in it along with a serious diet and track oriented suspension all at a more reasonable price.

Others hear "Z/28 getting cancelled".

The real message is "GM is reducing available trim levels" There are basically way too many trim levels on vehicles these days.

'Choice' is a good thing but its gone overboard. I'm not sure that more trim levels translate into 'more sales' but there clearly is complexity and cost to contend with.

The question of whether GM will continue with a car in this category has much more to do with the SigmaII Platform - which is also under the CT4 and CT5. If these two manage to actually have some sales - then there will be no room for the Camaro - BUT - as I suspect - if they sell in low numbers - then GM will have available production capacity for a new car in that class.

THIS car has floundered because it appears to have been around a long time - because when it was updated last - they did use the Sigma platform - but the styling was hard to tell from the older one.

If they are going to do another Retro - they really need to move to the later second version of the Camaro for inspiration - BUT - a real question is how Hybrids and EVs will eventually enter this segment. A well done high performance Hybrid - might have a chance. Of course - there was a time when GM would actually produce well styled cars too -- they could make this a killer.

Its too bad because its got a better chassis then the Mustang. The big demerit is its poor greenhouse and cheapo interior styling. The exterior styling is not bad but does not hold a candle to the Mustang. But it does have better front to rear balance then the Mustang along with a better ride. Another plus is the engine size gives it a significant torque boost over a Mustang GT.

The chassis versus the Mustang statement isn't true. They are surprisingly quite similar.

Mustang has an inherent disadvantage in that it is too front end heavy. Ford engineers have done a good job with PP2 on the GT. The problem is that it tramlines too much on public roads where a Camaro does not. In every other way I think the Mustang is a better car. Interior exterior, visibility, usability etc. The Camaro tends to ride and handle slightly better do to its better weight distribution. I think this also gets down to the fact that Camaro has enjoyed platform sharing with other GM products where as Mustang is really on its own chassis. Look I'm not saying that a Mustang doesn't handle and perhaps the turbo four has an advantage due to its lighter weight up front. Until you get to the GT350 chassis the Mustang is still inferior to performance optioned Camaro. However saying all this I think it is fairly important that you should be able to see well out of a car in day to day driving.

I'm very familiar with both and have had both at the track. You're spewing bullshit conjecture as incontrovertible fact. In all aspects of performance, it's a toss up between the two. The Mustang is slightly easier to hustle around the track however.

At a track I agree its a toss up. But not on the road. The PP2 option on the GT is twitchy and tricky to drive in the wet. But I get your a Ford guy so I know where your coming from. Needless to say I would own a Mustang over a Camaro any day of the week. That probably explains why GM is ditching it in the first place. The Mustang is simply a more livable pony car.

The dealer group sells Ford and Chevrolet [among other brands] and I know our products well. I've never experienced tramlining for example and I have driven them both on the notorious 405. I have a GT350 and a Z06 so I'm hardly either.
