Counting The Chicks Before They Are Hatched? Tesla Pickup Overtakes F-150 As Most Talked About Pickup
Tesla is good at creating hype without advertising and the Tesla Pickup truck is no exception as it overtakes the Ford F150 as the most talked about pickup truck in the US.

We have been talking about Tesla making a pickup truck for a long time, but things have intensified over the last year.

Tesla’s CEO has sought suggestions for features to add to the Tesla truck under development and he revealed some planned features, like an option for 400 to 500 miles of range, Dual Motor all-wheel drive powertrain with dynamic suspension, as well as ‘300,000 lbs of towing capacity’.

Online chatter may bring an awareness level higher, especially without requiring any advertising budget, but it probably has little to do with potential sales. Especially since there's zero information available right now on what the truck might offer.

Confirmed info so far:
- Price starting at $49,000
- Dual motor standard
- Dynamic suspension
- Option for 400-500 mile range (gonna be expensive)
- Option for built in air compressor and outlets for tools
- Seating for 6 adults
- Blade-runnerish design (I think the hood, windshield, and roof are a single piece, will look insane for a truck)

So the Model 3 was promised at $35K and was delivered at $70K. Thus, this will be an $80K pickup.

Say what you will about Tesla, but they’ve been on the market for less than a decade with the Model S, launched the model 3 which is thousands of consumers first EV purchase all over their world, already working on launching their second SUV, and giving the ppl something else to talk about with an upcoming pickup

Kudos...whether they ultimately sink or swim, you can’t say they didn’t work their ass off in the process

They've also been completely unopposed. Once mainstream opposition trickles onto the market things will change. Though it is not coming here, Honda's futuristic retro Civic EV would capture a LOT of hearts. The Leaf is a good attempt but not a serious attempt. Ditto the Bolt.

SanJose, I think you know I'm an EV supporter. But none of that I consider confirmed until production begins. Elon does have a history of over-promising on the first available models.

Lol @mdarringer, it’s not their fault they haven’t been opposed, it’s the mainstream automakers who only put out half assed attempts at hypbrids/EV’s over the years and brushed the EV market off until Tesla came along and showed them
It’s not a market to ignore

II didn't say they were at fault for not being opposed. So don't go down the path of insinuating that I said something that you invented.

They are largely unopposed because despite what the Tesla Gestapo here says, the EV market is a small niche in the international vehicle market and will be for quite some time.

You accept hype as fact, and that makes you easy to refute.

@mdarringer I also didn’t say you said it’s your fault, so don’t go being overly sensitive and make something out of nothing per usual....

Bottom line no one told mainstream manufacturers to rest on their laurels and sidelines for the Model S’s duration of being on the market, but they did until they couldnt ignore the market anymore and watch Tesla eat up a market they all neglected and brushed off

The mainstream automakers did not "rest on their laurels." Tesla has incurred billions in debt while making a small profit in only 3 of the quarters they have been in business 9anout 40). Without massive volumes they will never make enough profit to be an ongoing concern.
This is why mainstream automakers did not jump into this market. As MD says, it is still a niche market and far from a profitable one.
It is ignorant to suggest otherwise.

Tesla has over $10 billion and lost one billion in 2018. They are still in a negative cash flow and the expectation is when the second quarter financials are posted it will show a loss for the second quarter.

Oh and your right, the mainstream did not rest on laurels, they gave the EV market their best shot and failed miserably, Tesla came and exposed their piss poor efforts and is reaping the benefits of being first while they play catch up

TruthyTruthy - 7/4/2019 1:24:52 PM

You are wrong, dead wrong. They demonstrated what the pros and cons were. EVs are a money loser. i.e. Tesla is $10 billion in debt, just added $2.7 B more at an absurdly high interest rate and lost $1.0 billion last year.
Without the generous tax incentives to buy an
EV and the carbon credits there would be no Tesla. Elon found a way to manipulate these relatively new forms of corporate welfare.

You are COMPLETELY WRONG, and Porsche, Audi, Benz, Volvo, BMW, Ford, GM, Toyota, Hyundai, and the entire auto industry disagrees with you as they invest Billions in EV vehicle development.

Sit back, shut up, and learn something

It's a pretty crazy statistic and shows how far word of mouth go versus traditional advertising and sales. Given there is no official product yet, it doesn't really mean anything and doesn't necessarily translate to sales. My concern is the design will be too extreme for those that buy trucks. Then again, maybe it will open the idea of trucks to those that wouldn't traditionally buy them. I would expect the Tesla truck will fuel many fierce debates here in the future ;)

Tesla has slashed expenses and has not invested in any capex or R&D. So it is impossible for the company to create new models. They literally have not made any progress on this front.

To the agents at autospies, in order to get this site back on track discussing cars and not an EV debate, I suggest that once weekly you ask the reknown group here to answer a question about their car in each class. i.e. - what is the best full size luxury car and why do you think so? What is the best mid-size car?

Well if we restrict ourselves simply to the appearance of politicians and nothing else I don't mind commenting. Out of all the Dem candidates I think Biden an Gilibrand are the best looking. Warren is clearly the Sunday School bland looking type. But they all look better than our current occupant of the white house. Somehow the "Big lard ass with orange hair" does not epitomize anything more than a rich fat cat. I'm not sure that's the message our country really wants to convey. I wonder if he is capable of doing a sit up without a crane helping him. But listen McDonalds can only brand him a hero. He singlehandedly must help their bottom line every time he orders lunch. As for Tesla well Darringer is correct still no clear competition yet. Its seems that there is this constant delay actually getting the Taycan production ready or the IG from VW. Further where are the thousands of fast charging stations needed to make this a viable alternative. All there seems to be is a lot of talk.
