BMW Claims That They Chose Affordablity Over Range On New Mini EV - Wait...When Has A Mini EVER Been Considered Affordable?

BMW’s production chief Oliver Zipse was keen on defending Mini’s decision to offer the new electric Mini Cooper SE with only one battery option.

Zipse, who is considered to be BMW’s next CEO after current boss Harald Krueger announced he’s stepping down, said that a bigger battery pack would make the electric Mini too expensive for its own good.

BMW needs to make a Mini EV with 300 miles range and sell it for the price of a Cooper S and lose money on each one so as to buy Mini back into the market.

A base mini EV for the price of a Cadillac is not the ticket.

Mini needs a battery platform chassis like Tesla with a Mini-looking "hats" over it.

@MD- Yep. Mini hats, 1 Series Hats, 2 Series Hats, 3 Series Hats. Vertical / Horizontal. But this Mini will fail.

GEE - if they sell it for $19,995 with the low range - and offer a option for a longer range - that would be a bargain. I am sure it would sell well in europe where they sell lots of these little itty-bitty cars.

THe question I would have is where did they take the ROOM to put in a battery pack? THe mini doesn't have much to spare to begin with. And in the USA - where people like bigger cars than Ultra-teeny size - they already do not have enough to fuel sales of the cars. It won't sell as an EV here - even at $19,995.

I know right? BMW's are so poorly packaged to begin with...you wonder if this Mini became a 1-seater?

I do not know if they are poorly packaged so much as just too small for the price.
A GTI cost far less, is roomy enough for humans and does not have a gimmicky interior.

Starts at 32,000 euro!?! Who wrote the business plan for this?

To put it into perspective: the tesla 3 SR+ is 45,700,- including the taxes.

Still, the mini price/range is limiting it to a 2nd or 3rd car.

At $30k I would have expected at least 250 miles of range out of this car. It is much smaller and lighter than a Model 3, they could use a smaller/cheaper battery to get similar range.
