Will Aston Martin's CEO EAT These Words Down The Road?
If there's one thing I love, it's when chief executive officers get candid. Frankly, it's a happening that's few and far between.

That's because most of the time what they're saying has been so rehearsed and filtered by the public relations department you, more or less, have to read in between the lines. And then, there's just outright bullsh!t.

At a recent event though, Aston Martin's CEO, Andy Palmer, got real.

He called the Brexit strategy "laughable," said electric vehicle policy is "non sensical," and the cherry on top was Palmer saying that the notion of fully autonomous vehicles is "absurd." Mind you this was at an Aston Martin-backed event called Driving the Future.

Doesn't sound like Palmer got the memo.

Having said that, we've got to ask: Is Palmer going to EAT these words down the road, or is he the ONLY automotive executive talking common sense today?

What say you, Spies?

...Palmer also hit out at government strategy around future powertrain technology, and in particular its singular view that electrification is the answer to all transport environmental issues.

“EV is one route, it is not a panacea. The bit that pisses me off is when they try to pick a technological winner,” said Palmer. “The UK is trying to get on the front foot and say it wants to be a leader in electric vehicle technology but the truth is that nobody knows what the right technology is for 20-30 years time.

“Politicians can’t be taken seriously if they talk about 30-40 years ahead,” he added. “They are concerned with taking power and staying in power over a relatively short time, and they know they won’t have accountability over the much longer-term...

I think he is spot on and being very, very candid. F500 CEO's like stability and predictability. Also being educated men and women, they know that leaving a common market is just insane for so many reasons. Lastly, Toyota has always said electrification is a stepping stone to hydrogen which can use the same infrastructure (gas stations).

He was doing PR bluster and EVERYONE with a brain can see that.

He is 100% correct. However, in this world, fact and truth are subservient to agendas.

Evs will be a part of the business - we just don't know how much - but a lot less than the famous Ceo has predicted - due to lack of Infrastructure AND now that they have determined that overall - ICE vehicles pollute the earth less than EVs.

He does sell sports cars - the car unlikely to be autonomously used - why pay for performance the programs will NEVER use?

Fun fact. The DB5 movie car seen in the latest James Bond movies isn't really a Aston Martin at all. It looks like a DB5, but it has a bespoke structure, the body panels are carbon fibre and there is a Ford Mustang drivetrain in the vehicle. There is a video of Prince Charles visiting Pinewood Studios and Daniel Craig tells him all this while showing the car.

Full autonomy in our 'lifetime' is subjective - maybe in mine and Andy's lifetime (way past middle age), but perhaps our grand childrens lifetime it's possible. The DB that Andy is standing next to is real, maybe not in the movie that got blown up as in the previous comments. But these comments from Palmer is from a CEO that says sales numbers are best ever - yet inventory at dealers are at absurd - unsold levels. On cars.com it shows 114 new Vantages for sale (the actual inventory is much more, as many 'used' vantages are new to allow discounts), and over 200 new DB11's. The dealers are forced to buy inventory after a short period, thus sales ARE terrific - just not to actual buyers. The new designs are not being embraced - designs sanctioned by Palmer, and the elegance of the designs have been replaced by something much less - elegant. I say this painfully as a 32 year customer of Aston Martin which bought their cars based upon emotion and elegance, but not embracing this CEO's direction for the company. Had dealers (in the USA) sold all their inventory and used prices as a result rising, I'd pay attention to the CEO's opinions.

Don't worry, you will see full autonomy in your lifetime. There are a small handful of fully autonomous PRT systems in operation today, the largest one is in the middle east. Roads with mixed vehicles are more complex but the solution is not as far as most think.
